Subject: Be the BEST library advocate

Welcome to the third issue of PLA's monthly advocacy newsletter. PLA members will receive this newsletter automatically. Each issue will include updates on our latest advocacy efforts and ongoing stories from the Smartest Card @ Your Library campaign.

Advocacy Toolkit Coming Soon

To help you take steps toward demonstrating your library's value locally, PLA is developing more tools you can use as the next phase of the Smartest Card @ Your Library Campaign!  The toolkit currently in development will guide you thru the advocacy process with worksheets, facts and background material that help you link your library to shared community values and build a case for support of your library using research and stories.

Testing of toolkit components began in Boston and an overview of the toolkit will be presented at ALA 2006 National Conference and for sale at 2007 Midwinter Meeting in Seattle, WA.

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month!
Once again, ALA has chosen "The Smartest Card.  Get it.  Use it. @ your library" as the theme for Library Card Sign-Up Month.  More information about how you can use the theme to increase the number of folks in your communities who carry "The Smartest Card" can be found here.

Smartest Card Success Story
The "Smartest Card" Works for Chattanooga-Hamilton (TN) County Bicentennial Library!

Thanks to a $10,000 grant provided by the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga, the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Bicentennial Library was able to adapt PLA's national marketing campaign slogan, "The Smartest Card. Get It. Use It," for its local market.  The Smartest Card logo was seen on local CARTA buses, billboards, and downtown street banners. The library purchased PLA's public service announcements featuring George Lopez. Comcast, a local cable company, tagged selected PSAs with the library's local information.  These ads were seen on all three major networks and a variety of cable stations.

In recognition of the library's 100 years of service, special edition library cards are being issued celebrating the library's anniversary year. Each traditional library card comes with a key tag card for added convenience.  The new library cards feature a beautiful image of the downtown library's fountain and the Smartest Card logo. The fountain,
commissioned by Ruth S. and A. William Holmberg, was created by Jim Collins, a nationally renowned sculptor whose art can be found in numerous public spaces throughout Chattanooga.

Additionally, Hamilton County kindergartners were invited to come to their library branch and receive their first library card. Invitations featured a book worm holding one of the new anniversary library cards with the Smartest Card logo.  Invitations were issued through Hamilton County schools.  Along with their library cards, a multi-colored gel bracelet with "read" written in eight languages will be given to children who bring in their special invitations.

Children who already had a library card were not left out. Young library patrons brought in their invitations and library cards to get their bracelets.
