The U. S. Census Bureau sends me periodic updates of new census products. Particularly interesting this time is the Fact of the Day section with information about demographic changes in 4 Gulf Coast states in the aftermath of the devastating hurricanes of last year.

  Fact of the Day
Special Tabulation Shows Effects of 2005 Hurricanes

After the devastating hurricanes of late summer 2005, the states of Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi showed a decline in population while Texas showed an increase. Read about the details of the pre- and post-hurricane situation in the Census Bureau's special tabulation of population estimates and characteristics in these states and counties impacted by the hurricanes (Katrina, Rita, and Wilma). The tabulation shows data for the 117 counties eligible to receive Individual and Public Assistance (IPA) based on determinations made by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The estimates show July 1, 2004 and July 1, 2005 population as well as population as of January 1, 2006. In addition, we have released profiles for areas based on the American Community Survey - data for January to August 2005 and for September to December 2005. The profiles show data on a host of demographics and social, economic, and housing characteristics for the states and the impacted counties.

Access the special tabulation and other hurricane-related data.
