On 7/11/06,
Microsoft officially pulled the plug on Windows 98 and Windows ME and will
no longer issue security updates or provide technical support for the two
operating systems, which are still being used by more than 50 million
people. Microsoft hopes that these people will upgrade to Windows
XP.
"Consumers and
schools will be most affected by this announcement because they will no longer
get security fixes," said Michael Silver at research group
Gartner.
This announcement
should also concern some CTLS member libraries; I have seen a number of staff and
public access computers running Windows 98 during my visits to member
libraries. If you are interested in upgrading to Windows XP and your
computers meet the system requirements, I recommend ordering the
software from TechSoup.org. A single license for the "Windows XP
Professional English/Multilanguage Upgrade" only costs $8.00. See http://www.techsoup.org/stock/libraries/microsoft/default.asp for
more details and restrictions.
