Emma will discuss the value of theater in the digital age and outline practical strategies for using the arts to enhance literature appreciation and improve reading skills. Participants will learn: · Why live theatre is more important than ever and which essential life skills the arts provide for young people · Practical ways to incorporate theater and drama into story times, lessons, and after-school programs. · Tools to help young people create their own plays and theater pieces, and/or adapt existing material · Resources and ideas for utilizing the performing and visual arts to enhance and add dimension to the experience of reading a book Seminar Instructor: Emma Walton Hamilton, is the editorial director for The Julie Andrews Collection, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. She is also the author, with her mother, Julie Andrews Edwards, of fifteen children's books, including the Dumpy The Dump Truck series, and the New York Times bestselling Simeon's Gift and The Great American Mousical. As director of Bay Street Theatre's Educational Outreach, Kidstreet and Young Playwrights Programs her role encompasses bringing theater to children aged 18 months to 18 years. A former actress, Emma worked in theater, film and television for ten years before turning her attention to directing, producing, educating and writing. She was a faculty member for several years at the Ensemble Studio Theatre Institute in New York City and has served on the theater panel for the New York State Council on the Arts.
