Subject: Legal Issues for Libraries Workshops April 24 - May 25
The Texas State Library would like to invite Texas library staff to
the following continuing education workshop --
Don't Get the Book Thrown at You! Legal Issues for Libraries (Part
of the Law for Librarians Series)
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
Is it possible to provide access to diverse information in a
neutral, non-judgmental manner? Does your library enforce a
"viewpoint-neutral" policy allowing such access? If you want to learn more
about some common legal issues for libraries, this is the workshop for you.
In particular, we will address:
Meeting Rooms, Exhibits, and Displays -- How does your
library define eligibility for use?
Labels and rating systems -- They make finding the
information much easier, but how do you keep them truly objective?
Youth Access -- What is the library's role vs. the parents'
role in providing children's access to information?
Religious Issues - Conventional wisdom holds that
limitations to access are acceptable provided that the same policies apply
to everyone and that exclusion is not based
on, among other things, religious issues. What does that
really mean?
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?: Library directors, administrators, and/or
library staff.
PRESENTER: Ted Wanner, Continuing Education Specialist of the Texas
Library Association (TLA)
