Subject: [slm] Phone Scams

This is from Julie Todaro. I don't know if this affects public libraries or
not, but thought I would pass it on just in case.
These "go around" every few months and today's post to a listserv identified
a recent rash of these. A librarian posted: "I just received a call from
Michelle Farmer at Microtek Solutions. When the library aid answered the
phone, she said she just needed to get the model # from our printer real
quick. When I took the phone I asked her if I could call her back. She would
not give a number, she said she was in the middle of inventory and could not
receive calls. I asked her for the name of her boss. She said Bill O'Neal
and then hung up. I am sure that she is calling other libraries. Please be
aware of the scam and do not give them any information." If people answering
the phone are unaware of the scam, if you/we give the company the
serial/model number from our printer we begin receiving invoices and
sometimes products. It's typically a mess and certainly a scam. Just tell
them "no thanks" and hang up.
