-----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Dawn Vogler Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2007 5:26 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [slm] Western Council Certification Hi there, Some of you might have heard of the Western Council's Certification Program and if not, there is a link included below if you would like to find out more. Their certificate will be recognized by all of the states in the Western Council (much of the western half of the U.S.). It's like a more widely recognized Small Library Management Training Program certificate. It's for those that might not have an MLS, but want some sort of professional certificate to prove they've taken a good number of classes and obtained a set of core competencies in librarianship. There is a fee of $100 involved to get the certification. TPLS is already an approved continuing education provider for this program and I believe that AALS has an application in the works, as does TSLAC. In the future, if you would like to work towards the certification, some CE providers will let you know what core competencies are covered. There are pros and cons to this certification and I can certainly discuss them with those interested. My main point for posting is that there is now an online avenue for pursuing this certification through UNT's LEAD courses. Many of you have access to these courses through your Systems. It's another avenue if you are considering pursuing this certification: Library Education @ Desktop ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) is now an approved provider for the Western Council certificate program. Twenty-two western states (including Texas) are members of the Western Council of State Libraries. The certificate is for library practitioners, defined as library directors or managers without a masters of library and information science (MLS). The certificate requires that the practitioner has completed 240 contact hours in different competency areas and has library experience. [EMAIL PROTECTED] courses are being linked to certificate core competencies and listed with the number of contact hours and continuing education units, so tracking the certificate will be easy. Many of your systems already pay for [EMAIL PROTECTED] courses for their members, so the cost will be minimal. For more information about the certificate program, go to <http://certificate.westernco.org/applinfo.html> For more information about [EMAIL PROTECTED]'s totally online courses, go to www.leadonline.info <http://www.leadonline.info> I did recently learn that this certification can be retroactive. So, if you've taken a good deal of CE in the past, you can simply plug many of those courses into the Western Council's application. You may have all the core competencies already covered and could then simply apply for the certification with your $100. They can help you review your past CE to assess where you would need to fill in, if at all. If you have questions, just let me know!
