Subject: [texshare-users] K-12 statewide database package

Good news for Texas public schools! Through rider 88, the 80th Texas
Legislature has funded online research and information resources for
libraries in public schools. Through a partnership of the Texas State
Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC), Texas Education Agency (TEA), and
Education Service Center Region 20 (ESC-20), these resources will be
provided for K-12 public school libraries for the next two school years.
These resources will be available to public school libraries free of charge.
Public school superintendents will be receiving a joint communication from
TSLAC and TEA alerting them of this service in the next few days.

With the recommendation and approval of an advisory group of school library
professionals (See http://www.texshare.edu/k12/ttf_roster_2005_12.htmlfor
the roster), the partnership has built an online database package consisting
of EBSCO general content resources and an encyclopedia. The EBSCO general
content databases will be available on September 1, 2007. In mid-August, an
open call for bids began for an online encyclopedia component. We anticipate
having an online encyclopedia in place by December 1, 2007. Schools can
activate their accounts to access these resources by going to
http://web.esc20.net/k12databases/activation.htm.

In 2005, the Texas Legislature directed TSLAC to negotiate subscriptions to
online resources for school campuses. School campuses paid the subscription
costs for these resources during the 2005 - 2006 and 2006 - 2007 school
years. Over two million students on almost 3,600 campuses accessed
electronic resources through this program. Legislative champions wanted to
make sure that these resources were made available to every public school
campus, not just those that could afford access. Rider 88 accomplishes this
goal. A fact sheet with more information is available at any of the
following websites:
