Tackling the Dewey shelving part of this question: There's a free course on WebJunction through Library U called "Shelving with Dewey": http://www.webjunction.org/do/SearchDetails?id=1806 <http://www.webjunction.org/do/SearchDetails?id=1806&programType=ContinuingE ducation> &programType=ContinuingEducation About an hour long, you have to register with Library U, but it's still free. It has interactive exercises where you drag and drop the books into correct order. My old coworker would write some call numbers on index cards, then have the volunteers put them in order. He picked tricky ones to demonstrate the nuances of Dewey. Some other web pages on Dewey: This one is fun and I think that volunteers would connect to the classifications and illustrations: The Story of the Dewey Decimal System http://mte.asd103.org/library/dewey/deweystory.htm Let's Do Dewey: http://www.mtsu.edu/~vvesper/dewey2.htm Tutorial on Dewey Classification System http://library.wcsu.edu/web/help/finding/dewey/ Here's the classification table: http://www.lib.lsu.edu/instruction/callnumbers/dewey.html Hope this helps. I know that Austin public has a training program for volunteers, so maybe we can get some help from their volunteer coordinator. Our volunteer training leaves something to be desired. I know we can improve on our methods. I would be interested in how other libraries train volunteers, too. But we have noticed that our (very brief) training in shelving needs improvement. We were wondering if anyone has any ideas for tools, worksheets, techniques, etc. that we can use to train and teach new staff and volunteers about the Dewey Decimal System. I have found a few things online but it is very little and not what I was looking for. All help and advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, Angela Angela K.
