Since we are contemplating, again, circulating magazines, some questions
about magazine management in general have arisen.

1) Does your library circulate any magazines (or all magazines)? If
you don't circulate all magazines, which do you NOT circulate, and why?

Yes we do circulate all our magazines, even the children's titles. We
have purchased plastic magazine holders from Demco, put a barcode on
them, and then check that out to the patron.

2) If you circulate magazines, do you have two subscriptions to the
titles that you circulate (one to retain, and one to circulate)?

Nope, we just have the one as we do not circulate the most recent issues
but patrons can check out all back issues we have.

3) Do you bind back issues of magazines? If you do, why do you
choose to bind some titles, and not others?

While I came from a serials background (working, here in Texas, in
serials at the Benson Latin American Collection) it is hard for me not
too bind but we do not bind because of: 1) space; 2) we do not get many
titles; 3) the titles we get are more in the nature of "light" reading
and not academic, research, scientific, etc.; 4) many of our titles are
available via TexShare in full-text; 5) lack of staff to deal with the
binding company, pulling issues, looking for lost issues, etc.; 6) money
- it is expensive and since we are so small our discount would not be
great; and 7) patron demand is fairly low for out magazines.

4) How long do you retain back issues? Do you retain for a
longer period if the back issues are bound?

We only keep our back issues of adult titles for about 3-6 months and we
recycle them and/or donate them to homeschoolers, preschools, and a
nursing home. So far we have kept all issues of the titles that we
purchase for children.
