When we were considering joining, we got several negative responses because
Ipods aren't compatible.

We're actually having problems with it on two fronts; one that there aren't
enough new titles to interest a lot of people but also the sheer difficulty
of getting the titles we do have downloaded to a portable device. We've had
people come in and worked with them for an hour and couldn't get something
that was supposedly OK to download into their supposedly kosher device. And
of course many really prefer their iPods.

Usage wise, our statistics show our money is better spent buying audio CDs.

The fact is that shortly after we all began with this project, RB and
NetLibrary had a major falling out resulting in suits and countersuits.
They now claim to be trying to patch this up, but of course we have no idea
whether or when there will be a resolution helpful to us. I feel that this
has affected their service (especially the provision of the promised new
titles each month), and has made it less attractive to patrons. Even at the
greatly reduced price, negotiated by CTLS (for which many thanks!), what we
have to pay each year is not compensated by the usage we are seeing,
especially when there is so much competition for resources. For example, we
are planning to start a small adult collection in Hindi (mostly fiction), to
complement our very successful Bollywood video collection. The Bollywood
collection is in fact so successful that we will have to spend additional
funds to increase its size, but you can't quarrel with an annual turnover
rate of 24. The eAudiobooks just cannot compete with that.

We have not yet decided whether or not to renew next year, but the vendors
have not made a good case for themselves.

I hate to see you give up after only one year! Is there anything that could
be re-negotiated with the vendor, to make the product more usable?

We have decided to take it out of next year's budget. Usage low, possibly
due to its many restrictions and poor usability. Did anyone out there have
better luck with it?

For libraries participating in the consortium arranged by CTLS:

Is anyone else thinking about discontinuing this service when it comes up
for renewal?
