Judy,

For your research, Sarah Houghton-Jan recently did a filtering study for the
San Jose Public Library (CA). She blogged about it at
http://librarianinblack.typepad.com/librarianinblack/2008/02/sjpl-internet-f.html.
 The report is available at
http://www.sjlibrary.org/about/sjpl/commission/agen0208_report.pdf; it compares
three filtering packages - CyberPatrol, FilterGate, and WebSense.

Sarah also has posted about a filtering video the Lewis & Clark Library System
has released on YouTube ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_mpf1Q9u1I),
featuring a number of librarians discussing the topic.

Also, you could probably write to Arro Smith at the School of Information, UT
Austin, to ask if he could release any preliminary details about the filtering
studies that he's been doing in conjunction with the OpenChoice project (
http://www.ischool.utexas.edu/~choice/). His email is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Subject: [ctls-l] Internet Filters??

Hello All!

I have a patron coming in Thursday to discuss why we don't filter our public
Internet computers. When I mentioned this to my boss, she asked if I knew how
many libraries are filtering now. I'm still doing the research for the national
level, but I thought I'd ask you all in order to get a feel for the libraries
in our area. So:

Does your library have filtered computers?

Yes and no. Yes on children's. Yes on guest and any computer screen that faces
out. No on the computer screens that face upward (under a glass desk top). No
on the notebooks. On the notebooks, as they DO face out, if someone is looking
at something that a patron complains about, staff will go to the person and
remind them that what they are viewing can be seen by others. They'll either
move to a more discrete location or get out of the site.

Hopefully this is short enough that it won't be a hassle for you to respond (I
hate filling out surveys myself!).

Thanks!

Judy
