A few months back, the Austin Public Library announced that it is one of
the hundreds of libraries across the country to receive the Picturing
America grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The Austin Public Library is pleased to announce that it has received
the Fetzer Institute and American Library Association Grant: Love and
Forgiveness in the Light of Death book discussion series grant. Frank
Schmitzer, Branch Manager at the University Hills Branch Library will be
traveling to Chicago for his training, Dr. Reverend Maggie Izutsu is
committed to leading each of the five book discussions, and ALA has
calendared these discussions from January to May at the University Hills
Branch Library.

The Library has also received funding for the FRONTLINE/World grant in
cooperation with the American Library Association. This discussion
brings forward the library's opportunity to foster discussion and action
in the area of social entrepreneurship and public engagement. Tom Moran,
Adult Programming and Outreach Manager along with Bonita Snyder-Jones,
Managing Librarian at the Yarborough Branch Library will be hosting this
two-part discussion series. Dr. Tommy Darwin from the Office of
Professional Development and Community Engagement will be leading the
discussions.

Partners from the community will be very much involved in both of these
grants ranging from Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Austin Area
Interreligious Ministries, Friends of the Austin Public Library, KLRU,
Austin PBS, Office of Professional Development and Community Engagement
at the University of Texas at Austin, Hands On Central Texas, part of
the United Way organization, and the University Hills Branch Library
Book Club. The Austin City Council is expected to accept the award of
these grants formally in September.

Best, Sue
