Subject: [syscon-tx] 2009 Texas Heritage Digitization Meeting

The Texas Heritage Digitization will hold its annual meeting on Friday,
February 13, 2009 at the Lubbock Public Library
<http://library.ci.lubbock.tx.us/> .

The theme of this year's meeting is "Preventing Digital Disasters." Our
lunch speaker will be Michele Quinn, IT Coordinator at the Rosenberg
Public Library, who will discuss the impacts of Hurricane Ike on the
infrastructure of the Rosenberg Public Library and the Galveston/Texas
History Center.

Additional speakers this year include:

Ann Howington and Dreanna Belden, University of North Texas
Libraries: The Texas Digital Newspaper Program <http://tdnp.unt.edu/>

The University of North Texas (UNT) Libraries is the
lead institution in the The Texas Digital Newspaper Program
<http://tdnp.unt.edu/> , a part of the NEH and Library of Congress
National Digital Newspaper Program, also known as Chronicling America.
During the next 20 years, NDNP will create a digital resource of
historically significant newspapers published between 1836 and 1922 in
all 50 states and U.S. territories. While Chronicling America is an
important effort and the products of the program so far are impressive
(see http://www.loc.gov/chroniclingamerica/
<http://www.loc.gov/chroniclingamerica/search_fulltext_advanced.html> ,
the size of our state and the staggering number of newspapers titles
published in Texas makes it essential that UNT form partnerships with
other institutions and seek creative methods to expand the pace of
digitization.

Carlos Ovalle, School of Information, University of Texas at
Austin. Copyright Questions (and maybe some Answers).

Carlos Ovalle is a full time member of the technology
staff, a lecturer, and a doctoral student at the University of Texas at
Austin School of Information. He is also an American Library Association
Copyright Scholar and a member of the ALA Copyright Advisory Network
<http://librarycopyright.net/wordpress/> . He also writes the Copy This
<http://www.copythisblog.com/> blog. He will discuss copyright
regulation and use permissions, including Creative Commons and similar
licenses. Attendees can submit specific questions in advance by emailing
[email protected].

Additional presentations will include discussions on Train to Share, the
newest project from the Texas Heritage Digitization Initiative; a panel
discussion with the 2009 recipients of the Texas State Library and
Archives Commission's TexTreasures
<http://www.texshare.edu/programs/textreasures/> grants; and a series
of "5 minute updates" from various digital projects around the state.
