Subject: [pld] Pre-conference on conservation at TLA; stipends available

Dear PLD members,

I want to call your attention to a pre-conference session planned for
the 2009 TLA Annual Conference in Houston: "Connecting to Collections:
Constructing the Future." Did you know that building projects in public
and community college libraries may be eligible for stimulus funds from
the federal government? Start thinking about how to build the future
while preserving the past!

Providing the best environment to care for collections is challenging in
any building. When the building is itself part of your historic
collection, the challenges can seem insurmountable. This may help to
explain why only 4 of the 32 Carnegie libraries built in Texas remain
still serve their original purpose. Learn how libraries, museums,
archives, and other collecting institutions can balance collections
care, historic preservation, and information access while building
communities of ideals and innovation.

In the morning, speakers will discuss architectural, ethical, and
financial concerns in renovating historic buildings and caring for
unique collections. In the afternoon, attendees will have the
opportunity to visit historic sites that have been, or are in the
process of being, renovated for use as libraries and museums.

Funding for this workshop is provided in part by a Connecting to
Collections Statewide Planning Grant from the Institute of Museum and
Library Services.

Workshop cost: $65. To register, see
http://www.txla.org/conference/conf.html

A limited number of stipends (ranging from $65-$400) are available to
assist attendees from small institutions with travel and registration
costs. To apply, send an email to Danielle Plumer,
[email protected], including your name, the institution
you represent, and a short description of how attendance at this
workshop would benefit your institution and region. Please also include
a short budget with the funds you are requesting, including travel,
workshop registration fee, and up to one night's lodging. Recipients
will be asked to complete a short report on the workshop within six
months of attending, describing their experiences and how they have
shared their knowledge with others. Reports may be included in the
project website or other publications.

If you have any questions about this conference or the available
stipends, please contact me. I hope to see you in Houston!
