It depends on where the hard flooring is going. We replaced carpeting with hard
flooring in heavily trafficked areas, but most of the library is still
carpeted. Jennifer's comments about the mats are invaluable. Shoe wear is
important, too, whether or not the library is carpeted. Under that carpet is a
thin mat and... concrete.

Yes, carpet helps tremendously with noise. In fact, if you carpet the walls and
ceiling, you'd be in great shape, sound-wise!
But the most important thing is your staff's legs and feet...Concrete is a
killer for the veins and arteries in your legs and the bones and connective
tissue in your feet. We should all guard the health of our legs and feet! It's
also important to have rubber mats at each station behind the Circ desk, if
you're standing. I "worked the desk" for a big percentage of my working life,
and always wore crepe or rubber soled shoes, as well as standing on carpet. My
legs and feet aren't perfect, but they're a lot better than most people my age!

Does your library have carpet? Do you have suggestions for Ann for her new
library?
Thanks.
Laurie

Don't most libraries have carpet? We are having a discussion about just having
the concrete floors and no carpet. I worry about noise. Doesn't the carpet
help with the noise reduction? What is your opinion?
Thanks for your help,
Ann
