Just spotted this on PUBLIB and thought it might make a good program for
fans of several ages:

We don't have anywhere near the money it would take to get a real,
actual, Sprint Cup driver here, even though Charlotte is only four hours
away. What we have done is:

1)Invite the local motor sports columnist to come in and speak and do a
Q&A. Thomas Pope has been writing about NASCAR for 25+ years.

2)Invite another local expert, who can remember Lee Petty sitting around
his grandfather's living room with some of the other local dirt-track
drivers, whose names completely escape me

3) Hold a program ourselves after returning from the 50th running of the
Daytona 500, showing photos of what we saw and just generally noshing
about the sport

4) Invite a local dirt track driver to come out and talk about "doin' it
in the dirt"

5) Finally, inviting another man who is active in the local dirt track
scene, has driven as well as owned a dirt-track team, and usually works
as a flag man at our local track.

BTW, none of these programs cost us a cent!

NASCAR and other sports are far removed from the typical library
program, so these folks thought "outside the box". If you are trying to
interest a new demographic to your library (GUYS), you might consider
this or something similar. Baseball is going on, basketball (NBA) just
ended, and football is coming up. Less well-publicized sports such as
tennis, swimming, soccer, and lacrosse all have their fans. Perhaps a
"sports week" or "sports evenings" over several weeks would bring in new
people to visit about these topics. Have your best (current) sports
books out and bookmarks with helpful websites on professional & college
sports. Let me know if you need help finding those.
