Subject: [syscon-tx] FW: Museum Workshop Deadline

Is your community's heritage safe? Does your local museum, library,
archives or other cultural institution have a plan for responding to
emergencies both big and small? Our research tells us that only
one-quarter of museums statewide do. That's a lot of Texas heritage at
risk!

The Texas Historical Commission (THC) and the Texas Association of
Museums (TAM) are excited to announce 12 workshops scheduled for this
summer in communities across the state. The objective of the workshops
is to help museums become better prepared to respond to and recover from
emergencies of all kinds.

With the start of hurricane season upon us, many of you are probably
starting to think about what you'll do to prepare for a potential
storm-but museums along the coast aren't the only ones who need an
emergency plan. Emergencies and disasters come in all shapes and sizes.
For example, just in the last month, museums and their collections have
been affected by weeks of heavy rain, failed roofs, encroaching
wildfires, and broken sewer mains.

Encourage the cultural institutions in your community to attend one of
these summer workshops and learn more about safeguarding your heritage.
Workshops participants will:

* Perform a risk analysis to determine what particular emergencies
they are likely to face at their institutions
* Using the host facility as example, locate key utility
shut-offs, including electric, water and gas, as well as identify
potential issues with equipment such as the HVAC, fire extinguishers,
and alarms.
* Identify the elements of an emergency plan and begin drafting an
actual, usable outline to take back to their institution
* Learn who needs to be involved in planning and responding to an
emergency
* Practice salvaging wet or otherwise damaged collection
objects-including textiles, paper, paintings, metals and more
* Meet with THC and TAM staff and develop resource networks with
colleagues from other area museums
* Receive an Emergency Response and Salvage Wheel and other
Heritage Preservation and Institute of Museum and Library Services
publications and resources

Registration Information:

* Fee is $25 and includes lunch and all supplies
* Limited to first 30 registrants - space fills up fast, so
register early!
* 2 people per institution allowed - to allow as many institutions
