Wish list: I wish we had a work room adjacent to the office (we don't have one at all). When we get in supplies or donated books, our office looks very crowded.
I wish we had a private study/computer room, and a little more sitting area room for patrons to sit and read. I wish our book stacks areas and our children's room was bigger. I think we allowed room for the books we had at the time and did not plan for growth. I wish we did not have an upstairs. We use it for the computer server and for storage, and it is too hard to haul heavy stuff up and down the stairs. For our conference room, we have a huge, beautiful, but VERY heavy table. We frequently have to move it to the side when we have special programs in that room, and it is very hard to move and takes about 4 people. So I wish we had bought a more portable table. The simplicity of the t-shape is working beautifully for us and we have just the right amount of space in the right places because Elaine Miller and Beth Fox very cleverly established exactly how much room was needed for what purposes before the building was programmed. You all are welcome to come have a look (and Jan, we're not that far from you! :- ) Cheers, Lisa Lisa Charbonnet Branch Manager Laura Bush Community Library 9411 Bee Cave Road Austin, Texas 78733 512.381.1404 Westbank Community Library District: One Library, Two Locations! Jan would like to learn from the mistakes of your building so that her building is better. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and experience. We are hoping to begin an addition to our library within the next year or two. Our FOL group and Library Advisory Board are in the process of making preliminary plans for a layout that meets the needs of our patrons and staff. I know many of you have recently built, renovated or added on to your libraries. I would appreciate any advice, suggestions, or warnings you may have for us. I would enjoy knowing what works well for you and what things you would do differently. Thank you in advance.
