This series looks really good! Note especially that our own Susan Mann
will be one of the authors/presenters, as well as Bob Walton, former
TSLAC Automation Consultant and Julie Todaro, Austin Community College
Dean of Library Services

Subject: [ceproviders] New CE program from TLA

Collegues in the Staff Development & CE Providers Interest Group -

TLA is about to launch a new CE program in October. Some of you have
already heard about this program through other channels. We call it the
Strategic Initiatives CE Series.

The series is a partnership between the Texas Library Journal and the
TLA CE office. Each issue of TLJ will feature special articles on a
particular family of topics, followed in the next month by a webinar
from each author. This new program has begun for many reasons:

* It responds to feedback from the TLA membership that they want free or
low-cost CE through distance education. This request has been expressed
in several surveys, including the 2009 Conference Survey, the
Transforming TLA Survey, the Technology Task Force Survey, and the
Strategic Plan Survey.

* It focuses on broad topics prioritized by the membership in the last
Strategic Planning Survey, now formally set in the TLA 2009-2012
Strategic Plan: communication (including, but not limited to, advocacy),
collaboration, leadership, and innovation.

* These topics also establish a niche for TLA outside of the basic
library training that the Systems and ESCs cover so well, and
signifcantly different than the great high-end technical courses from
Amigos Library Services. The multimedia channel is also unique,
combining print articles with live webinars for each presenter.

The Fall series will focus on communication. Later seasons will cover
collaboration (winter), leadership (spring), and innovation (summer).
The number of webinars will vary, but we plan to have enough programs to
cover multiple library types.

TLA Strategic Initiatives CE Series: Fall 2009

Tuesday, October 13, 3:30-4:15pm

Dr. Julie Todaro, "School Library Data: I've called you all here today
to..."

Julie Todaro, dean of library services for Austin Community College,
will show how to use the school data from the recent TLA voter opinion
survey to market school library programs and improve communications with
local PTAs, support groups, and administrators. She has worked with
school library administrators on this issue and chairs the TLA PR
Committee. Todaro's webinar will provide realistic, replicable
strategies for convincing others to speak out for school libraries.

Tuesday, October 20, 2:00-2:45pm

Susan Mann, "Building Relationships and Influence That Will Help Your
Library"

Susan Mann, director of Hillsboro City Library, will provide "in the
trench" training on cultivating and influencing elected officials and
making sure libraries, librarians, and friends groups are at the
decision-making table. Having skillfully negotiated the art of being
heard, Mann offers a unique, creative, and practical program for the
taking charge of your library's future. Mann follows up with a live
online discussion on building relationships and "making a good
friendship count": dealing with controversial matters, using
relationships to support PR, and reviewing examples of when things go
right and wrong.

Tuesday, October 27, 2:00-2:45pm

Robert Walton, "'Big' Challenges (and Opportunities) for Academic
Libraries"

Robert Walton, chief executive officer of Claremont University
Consortium, and former executive vice president and chief financial
officer for Innovative Interfaces, Incorporated, will address the trends
and changes he sees facing academic libraries. Now, as an academic
administrator, he'll share strategies for advancing academic libraries
for the next generation of higher education. Walton's webinar will
feature a panel of Texas academic librarians reacting to Walton's ideas
and discussing what, from an administrator's perspective, makes
librarians credible in the higher education arena.

To register: Please visit www.txla.org/ce (TLA members can also register
on the Members Only section of the TLA web site - if you do so, the
system will automatically populate the registration form with data).

Email will be sent to registrants with detailed information on how to
log in to the webinar before the event. We carefully chose the ReadyTalk
system as our platform, which combines robust cost-efficient technology
with great support service, the ability to handle large numbers of
attendees, simple control panels for both presenters and participants,
and a registration system that could work seamlessly with our existing
processes. Participants will need to log in to BOTH a conference call
and a web site. The conference call is toll free. The web site requires
no special downloads, although it does require Javascript.

Participants who are uncertain of their system's ability to connect to
an outside webinar can visit
https://www.callinfo.com/test.html?host=readytalk to instantly test
their computers for working Java.

Participants will be able to print certificates of CPE credit for the
live events. Non-credit recordings of the webinars will also be
available for viewing at a later date.

Look for the launch of the Strategic Initiatives Series in the next
issue of Texas Library Journal!

(coming to you around October 1)
