Especially for folks looking at e-rate and possibly CIPA, OpenDNS looks
like a good filtering alternative.

 <http://www-files.opendns.com/newsletter/common/img/star.gif> Hooray!
20 billion queries in a single day!

20 Billion! <http://blog.opendns.com/2009/12/16/20-billion-queries/>

Last week - for the first time in our history - we answered more than 20
billion DNS queries in a single 24 hour period. Twenty billion queries.
That more than doubles the total number of queries we answered as
recently as April 2009 when we announced we'd hit the 10 billion
milestone. And we've never had downtime.

This is an extremely positive indication for us, as it points to the
increasing demand for a rock-solid, reliable DNS service that not only
makes your Internet faster and more reliable, but safer and smarter,
too. We now have 15 million users around the world. More than 25,000
schools choose us to keep their kids safe online. And businesses of all
sizes are switching in droves to OpenDNS.

Thanks to everyone for helping us achieve this awesome milestone.

How-To: Enable SmartCache on your network.

SmartCache<http://www-files.opendns.com/newsletter/2009_12/img/smartcach
e.gif>

SmartCache is one of OpenDNS's most significant DNS caching innovations.
The service - included in all versions of OpenDNS - keeps track of the
last known good IPs for Web sites that are experiencing an authoritative
DNS outage and hands them back instead of returning no answer. In many
cases, the IPs associated with the web server or other services you are
trying to reach work just fine and the Web site loads successfully.
Without SmartCache, it'd feel like the site was down. So in effect,
SmartCache makes Web sites that are down and unreachable for the rest of
the Internet load for OpenDNS users.

In order to take advantage of SmartCache, you still need to take action
and enable it on your network. Here's how to do it:

1. Log in <https://www.opendns.com/dashboard/> to your OpenDNS
account.
2. Go to the Settings tab.
3. Select the network you want to enable SmartCache for.
4. Choose Advanced Settings.
5. Select "Enable SmartCache on this Network" at the top.

Spotlight: Titleserv

Titleserv<http://www-files.opendns.com/newsletter/2009_12/img/titleserv_
logo.gif>

Secure and reliable DNS is of the utmost importance for Titleserv, a
leading provider of title insurance, appraisal and settlement services,
operating offices across the United States. Which is precisely why the
company chose to deploy OpenDNS Enterprise at all of its locations.

"We looked at everything available and OpenDNS was by far the best,"
said Michael Dragone, network admin at Titleserv, who calls the insight
OpenDNS stats provide to his team "invaluable."

"We saw many queries for some domains that we didn't expect and it
turned out to be problematic software. We were able to investigate
further and solve the issue," he continued. "OpenDNS stats provide
insight we wouldn't otherwise have. The service is easy to test and
deploy, easy to manage, and much faster to respond to queries than other
DNS services."

Thanks, Titleserv!
