(Austin, Texas), The Mexican American Cultural Center in collaboration with El
Corazón de Tejas, the Central Texas Chapter of REFORMA, the National
Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the
Spanish Speaking, presents a one evening program entitled Noche de Cuentos/ A
Night of Storytelling on Thursday, March 25, from 7 -9 pm. This event is free
and open to the public.

The program will focus on the theme "We All Come From Somewhere"/Todos venimos
de algún lugar." The purpose of Noche de Cuentos is to promote literacy in the
community by showcasing the importance of telling one's own story and
histories. It is important for Mexican-American youth to learn how their
community's local writers, high achievers, and home-grown heroes have
contributed to the development of Austin over the years.

Featured storytellers include Belinda Acosta, author of "Damas, Dramas and Ana
Ruíz" and the soon to be released Sisters, Strangers and Starting Over; Teresa
Palomo Acosta, co-author of "Las Tejanas: 300 Years of History", poet and
author of children's books; Danny Camacho, the unofficial archivist of the Metz
Elementary School community and the son of Lorraine "Grandma" Camacho, for whom
the Camacho Center is named after; and Leti de la Vega, a singer-songwriter who
chronicles her story as a Tejana woman through music. A special guest, Maribel
Castro, the first Mexican American elected as president of the Texas Library
Association, will share her story about how her father's encouragement to read
influenced her life.

Our guest presenter is Oralia Garza Cortes, a past president of REFORMA,
library advocate and Children's Services Consultant. For more information
about this event contact Linda I. Crockett at 512-478-6222. The Mexican
American Cultural Center is located at 600 River Street, Austin 78701.
