We have had 3M tattletape systems for over 15 years. We will be moving to RFID
by the end of next week. We will close next week and have 10 pads to convert
the 180,000 item collection. Volunteers and staff will do the work. We decided
NOT to do the smart bookdrop because we would have to ID the items with hold
receipts, and it seemed to flow better by just checking in the 10-12 items
simultaneously so we can both check the number of items in AV and better manage
the hold slip process. We have a lot of holds. We studied Cedar Park's and
Leander's systems and opted for the TechLogic functionality, and liked the
check in module in particular.

For libraries with a lot of check in room space, and something to consider as
you begin to remodel, it would be good to design your space for multiple
sorting bins that are filled automatically, as well as enough power to manage
the shoots. This may be where the greatest time savings can occur by sorting at
least into smaller areas of shelving, e.g., all adult fiction, all easy, all
non-fiction, etc. Costs a lot. It isn't necessary for the smallest libraries,
but if you see circ growing to 500,000 plus, it may be worthwhile at least to
plan for it. Do talk to 3M and TechLogic, in particular, for space and power
for your planning stages.

We did purchase 5 self-checks, all with credit card payment as well as two
stations that will handle coin and cash in addition to the credit card
payments. Cedar Park is really efficient-we both have the same circulation but
they have considerably less staff. I don't know how they could have handled it
all without the RFID. They have only one staff member, most of the time, at
their single service desk. Way to go, Pauline!

I am interested in this issue as well, so please include me in replies. Thanks!

One of our member libraries is planning a new building and wants to ask about
security systems.

"Are most libraries nowadays going with RFID instead of Checkpoint?"

If you have a security system, which one do you have? How does it work? Do you
like it? Is it effective? Have you had any issues with self-check and this
security system?

Any other thoughts you could share about how long it took to add security
strips to your collection would be helpful. Please mention collection size or
how many books/items could be "stripped" in an hour.

Thanks!
