Last month, we announced Pen 2 Paper, a disability-focused, state-wide creative writing competition. This contest seeks to engage Texans of all ages to consider and reconsider their experiences with and ideas and stereotypes about disability. In an effort to truly make this event state-wide, I am asking you to help me promote Pen 2 Paper at your library. More so in smaller towns than in large cities, the library is not only a place to find books and other resources, but it is also a community center, hang-out, and point of contact with the rest of the world. For this reason, I feel that libraries are ideal for telling Texans in all corners of the state about Pen 2 Paper. I am particularly enthusiastic for students (junior high through university) to submit entries to Pen 2 Paper. Again, I believe that the library is the perfect place to reach this age group during the summer months. It may even be possible to incorporate this contest into summer reading programs for teens and tweens. Entries may be submitted, though, by any Texan- veterans, parents of children with disabilities, children of parents with disabilities, advocates, teachers, librarians, anyone! I have attached full page and half page fliers to this email, which I encourage you to make available to your patrons. If you do not have the printing capacity but would like to help publicize Pen 2 Paper, please let me know, and I'll mail you as many as you like.
