If it weren't for local vendors, I doubt our program would be as successful as
it is. Parents really like the coupons. The kids love the two free Lone Star
Donuts and have for 30 years (their parents remember them fondly, too), the
adults love the $50 gift certificate from Gumbos, it is fun to shop with a
$5.00 coupon from Kaleidescope Toys. I'd try to minimize the buy one get one,
but in this economy you may have no choice.

It is a great way to introduce people to your local vendors, and builds some
visibility for the library. The donuts were so popular at Lone Star, I think we
either had to limit them some way or we have a cap now-with 5000 kids in the
program that is rather much for one donut shop. But, I'll let one of my staff
members who have obtained the prizes talk about it a bit more.

Parks have been doing it for decades. Why shouldn't the library?

I need to justify asking local businesses for support for the summer reading
program. I would appreciate it if you could take the time to let me know what
you think are the benefits of having local sponsors for the summer reading
program.

Thanks
