He is nominally a Muslim. He became a practicing and speaking believer in the
course of the Persian Gulf War. Naturally, he was calling his being a fellow
Arab and Muslim to the attention of potential Middle East supporters. It was
not in vain as Saddam has the support of the man in the street of the various
and sundry Islamic police states. Joe Six-pack Muslim likes him because
Saddam sticks his finger not only into America's eye but also poses a threat
to their own local despot. In turn the Muslim dictators, are properly scared
of Saddam and thus detest him, correctly viewing him as a threat to
themselves

Your statement about Saddam being a mini-Hitler is on the money in terms of
his ambitions. One of the things that Arabs i other countries find attractive
about him is that he, like Hitler, has a historic agenda, he wants to restore
the former glory of the Iraqi people, unite the Islamic nations, defeat the
Christian nations, and rule his empire with his proven iron hand. He doesn't
give a shit about Islam but he would like to place his culture at the top.
All that matters to him is who is in charge (sort of like the Republicans).

His war upon Iran was to be the first step. When that failed he invaded what
would have been next in his list of acquisitions. He wanted Kuwait to build
his war chest before making a second run on Iran. Why Iran first? Because
the Arab countries would not be alarmed and of course they weren't.

Yes, he already had enough oil for any one country. Actually Saddam did a
much better job at enhancing Iraq materially than the surrounding Gulf and
non-Gulf Islamic states, i.e. his people were generally more educated, had
more responsible jobs, permitted uncensored literature, had a larger middle
class on a proportionate basis, had better infrastructure in terms of roads,
highways, bridges, schools, hospitals and so forth. Understand that all those
articulate, obviously well educated Christian Iraqis that were interviewed
during the GW are unknown in the other Gulf nations. In fact, Saudi Arabia
ran off its Jews and Christians long ago and privately murder any who convert
to Christianity. Why was Saddam seemingly so progressive? Because he had to
have a strong Iraq if he was to fulfill his plans. Of course, now that he has
wasted 20 years of possibilities, it is too late for him.
