Katheryn The December 7 Edward Zehr article about all of the old hands from Watergate (Sam Dash, Elliott Richardson, Hillary Clinton, and Terry Lenzner) coming back for a repeat reminds me of an old NEWSWEEK column by Meg Greenfield about the BCCI scandal. She asked why it is that the same people keep showing up for all the scandals that plague our corrupt institutions. Oddly, there are even more tie-ins than what Mr. Zehr produced. One of them was the biggest of all the Watergate prosecutors, Leon Jaworski. Mister Jaworski had been involved on the fringes of government for a long time before becoming Watergate Special Prosecutor after Cox got fired. Jaworski was on the staff of the Nuremberg prosecution, and later became the head of the MD Anderson Foundation in Houston, Texas. According to David Wise and Thomas Ross, in their book THE INVISIBLE GOVERNMENT, Jaworski had allowed the MD Anderson Foundation to be used as a "conduit" (laundry) for illegal CIA money flowing to left wing organizations in the United States. In the early 1990s, Jaworski's law firm would turn up in the affair of the looted Savings and Loans in Texas that cost the taxpayers nearly three quarters of a trillion dollars. According to Pete Brewton's THE MAFIA, THE CIA, AND GEORGE BUSH, dealing with CIA involvement in S&L looting, the lawyers in the Houston firm FULBRIGHT AND JAWORSKI, Leon Jaworski's firm, read Brewton's HOUSTON POST stories for libel. One of the attorneys for the firm kept balking at approving them for publication because one of the players mentioned by Brewton's stories was "not a public figure." This man was Walter Mischer. Mischer is one of these cats who has buddies in both the Republican and Democratic parties. This is the kind of corrupt relationship that would blow the lid off the phony "battles" between the two parties and expose them as being corrupt. Mischer and some of his pals were involved in BCCI as well. Speaking of BCCI, we have two more characters from past scandals and tragedies, CLARK CLIFFORD and a man named DAVID ATLEE PHILLIPS. Everyone knows who Clifford is, one of FDR's and Truman's advisors, then Johnson's Secretary of Defense after MacNamara got us bogged down in his little war in Vietnam, and who sported gold collar pins throughout his public life. Clifford got jammed up for allegedly fronting the BCCI takeover of American Bancshares. Some other past scandal figures got mixed up in that affair, such as BURT LANCE. Clifford and David Atlee Phillips got together when Phillips was forced to testify before the SENATE SELECT COMMITTEE ON ASSASSINATIONS in 1976. Phillips had been Station Chief in Mexico City in September, 1963, when LEE HARVEY OSWALD allegedly visited the Soviet and Cuban Embassies in that city. Supposedly, the CIA captured the Oswald visit to the Soviet Embassy in still pictures taken as he entered, and in tape recordings. When the Senate asked Phillips if the tapes were available, Phillips stated that the CIA routinely destroyed such tapes two weeks after they were produced. In reality, the FBI had obtained that tape in December, 1963, some three months after it was made, in order to ascertain if the voice on the tape was actually Oswald's. The FBI concluded that the voice was NOT Oswald's but that of an impostor. The upshot: Phillips had lied to the Senate, and he had gotten away with it. At his side was his attorney: CLARK CLIFFORD. No one has bothered to find out why someone would go to the Soviet Embassy in Mexico City pretending to be an "unknown loner and loser" like LEE HARVEY OSWALD. Now we have the latest bombshell, coming from former liberal Democrat television producer, DANIEL HOPSICKER. Hopsicker was on Stan Solomon's radio show a few months back, stating the following about the MENA affair: 1. Barry Seal was a CIA operative, not an asset or contract agent. 2. Seal had been CIA even while he was the youngest pilot in TWA history. 3. Seal, from New Orleans, Louisiana, had been acquainted with another teenager from New Orleans: LEE HARVEY OSWALD. 4. Seal and Oswald were in the same Louisiana CIVIL AIR PATROL unit together as teenagers. Their commander was DAVID FERRIE, CIA contract agent involved in the Bay of Pigs operation, and a suspect of former New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison in the assassination of John F. Kennedy. 5. Seal flew the getaway plane for the real 11/22/63 assassination team. So, if Hopsicker is right, even Mena and Whitewater come full circle with Dallas and Watergate.
