If Hustler did not leak the marital infidelity story on
Livingston, could it have been the White House and/or their
private investigators?

Hustler Denies 'Outing' Livingston Infidelities

   By Arthur Spiegelman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The sex magazine Hustler said Friday it was
not the source of information about the marital infidelities of House
Speaker-elect Bob Livingston but claimed part of the credit anyway.

``We had the goods on him and he was aware of this,'' publisher Larry
Flynt said on NBC's ``Today'' show as all of Washington buzzed about
Livingston's forced admission about his private life.

Livingston issued a statement Thursday night after learning that Roll
Call, the Congressional newspaper, was about to publish a story on his
private life that would raise embarrassing questions just as the
Republican-dominated Congress began debating articles of impeachment
   against President Clinton.

Hustler's executive editor Alan MacDonell admitted his publication was
scooped. ``We are kind of upset that the story was broken by Roll
Call...we have plenty and better information about him (Livingston)
and other Republicans and Democrats. But on the other hand we have
gotten a lot of publicity so it may help us in the long run.''

Widespread reports Thursday had identified Hustler as the source of
the news Roll Call was about to print. Hustler has been investigating
the sex lives of several politicians since Flynt offered up to $1
million earlier this year for tips on infidelities by Congressmen.

MacDonell said the magazine received 2,000 calls and had actively
   pursued about 200 tips.

``I can't give you any names now but we are close to presenting
information about two Republicans and may do so before New Year's
either in a news conference or on our Web site,'' he said, adding that
Hustler was carefully marshaling its evidence because ``we will be
held to a higher standard than other publications.''

MacDonell said that while Hustler did not give its information to Roll
Call on Livingston, he suspected that a source who had been working
with the magazine may have also contacted the newspaper.

``The leak did not come from us,'' he said, adding that Hustler had
planned to publish a big political expose in its April issue but was
   considering moving it up.

Livingston admitted that during his 33-year-long marriage he had ``on
   occasion strayed.''

He declined to give any details but, in a reference to Clinton, said
that none of the affairs was with employees or staff and ``I have
never been asked to testify under oath about them.''

The Republican-dominated House of Representatives debated Friday
whether to approve articles of impeachment against Clinton for his
efforts to cover up an affair with a White House intern, Monica
   Lewinsky.
