Khatami: US-British campaign against Iraq is an international conspiracy
Iran, Politics, 12/30/98

Iranian President Muhammad Khatami has strongly criticized the recent
US-British military campaign against Iraq and described it as an
"international conspiracy."

He asserted the importance of maintaining closer cooperation among the
region's countries for "ensuring their security by their own means."

Khatami's statements were expressed during his meeting with the new Qatari
ambassador to Iran, Hussein al-Dawsari. The Iranian President did not hide
his criticism of the "carelessness shown by certain countries" toward the
"drastic collapse in oil prices."

He called upon the oil-producing and exporting countries, especially those
in the region, to cooperate in order to take "a firm position to withstand
this situation."

Iraqi delegate at AL: Delay in foreign ministers meeting reflect internal
conflict in Arab states
Iraq, Politics, 12/30/98

Sultan El-Shawi, Iraqi's new delegate at the Arab League, stated that
delaying the meeting of the Arab foreign ministers to January 24 revealed
that there is a gap between public opinion and that adopted by Arab
officials.

He said that the official Arab position "must express what was expressed by
the Arab people."

He added that Iraq renewed its demands after the US - British attacks
earlier this month, reinforcing the importance of severely condemning this
attack as well as the importance of lifting the siege and paying
compensation for the damage caused by these attacks.

He added that Iraq will not recognize the no-fly zones imposed in northern
and southern Iraq. Sultan urged the Arab states on backing Iraq in this
demand because it is a part of the Arab nation and this could happen to any
other Arab state.

Baghdad condemns postponement of Arab foreign ministers meeting
Regional, Politics, 12/30/98

Iraq has officially condemned the Arab league decision to postpone up to
next January 24 the Arab foreign ministers meeting which was scheduled last
week.

A spokesman for the Iraqi foreign affairs ministry termed the decision as
"a dangerous precedent" violating the league's functioning rules.

"It is a dangerous precedent because no Arab league meeting has ever been
canceled or deferred in the past due to the refusal of a minority of its
members," the spokesman said.

The Arab League has justified the postponement by the request made in this
regard by three countries of the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council.

Iraqi media condemned the postponement, which it said, was ordered by
Washington to absorb the Arab people's anger triggered by the US-British
missile strikes.
