-Caveat Lector- >From ArabicNews.CoM Qatar: US troops protect the Arabs from each other Qatar, Politics, 12/31/98 Qatar's Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jasem al-Thani has said that the US and British troops in the Middle East are protecting the Arabs from each other. In an interview with the Qatari al-Jazira satellite television station on Monday night Sheikh Hamad added that the Arab Gulf countries invited the US and British fleets to the region to protect them, mainly from other neighboring Arab countries. He added that Qatar was exposed to a coup attempt in 1996 prepared by Arab states, but he did not name these countries. He asserted that the US does not use force against Iraq without a clear decision from the UN Security Council. But he stated that the Gulf states lie to their people in that they say they do not permit the United States and Britain to use their territories to attack Iraq. He also added that Qatar hopes an Arab summit would be held, but they have to set for it carefully so it could lead to positive outcomes. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Aziz accuses Mubarak of using US double-standard Iraq, Politics, 12/31/98 The Iraqi daily al-Joumhoreyah on Tuesday issued an article written by Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz in which he strongly criticized Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who held Iraqi President Saddam Hussein responsible for the problems Iraq is suffering. Aziz wrote: "The Egyptian President has found an easy outlet for himself, personally and put the blame on the Iraqi leadership." Aziz added, "President Mubarak, who is the President of the greatest Arab country, did not deal with the aggression from the perspective of international legitimacy. He did not say what had been ever said by numerous presidents, politicians and writers -- many of them from Western countries -- that this aggression has no basis in what is called international legitimacy, a matter which contradicts with the UN Security Council resolutions and threatens the very role of the UN." Aziz asserted that the Egyptian president, who always talked about international legitimacy and called for its implementation, especially in what relates to the Iraqi side, "is practicing the same double standard policy pursues by the US." Meanwhile, the spokesman for the Iraqi Foreign Ministry denounced the postponement of the consultant ministerial meeting of the Arab foreign ministers until January 24, 1999, at the request of the Gulf Cooperation Council member states. He said it never happened that a meeting for the Arab League was canceled or postponed "under the request of a minority." Meanwhile, Iraqi Foreign Minister Muhammad Saeed al-Sahaf has concluded a three-day official visit to Yemen during which he conveyed a message from Saddam Hussein to Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The new Iraqi representative at the AL, Sultan al-Shawi, accused certain Arab Gulf states of taking negative position towards the Arab inclination to maintain closer relations with Iraq. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ UAE: Israel constitutes greatest threat, calls for lifting sanction of Iraq United Arab Emirates, Politics, 12/31/98 The United Arab Emirates UAE Information minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Bin Sultan al-Nahyan has confirmed that Israel constitutes the greater danger and threat against the existence of the Arab nation. In an interview with the London BBC radio on Wednesday, Sheikh Abdullah said that Israel possesses atomic bombs and unconventional developed weapons and does not abide by the international agreements which ban these weapons. He viewed that the UN inspectors committee of the Iraqi weapons became a "political" committee, a reference to the allegations that UNSCOM was following political motivations that are anti-Iraq. He added the United Arab Emirates calls for lifting the sanctions on Iraq and confirmed solidarity with the Iraqi people. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ A<>E<>R The only real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes. -Marcel Proust + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + In accordance with Title 17 U.S.C. section 107, this material is distributed without charge or profit to those who have expressed a prior interest in receiving this type of information for non-profit research and educational purposes only.
