Abel, a shepherd, has the violence outlet of animal sacrifice. Cain, a tiller of the soil, has no such outlet. So instead, Cain kills Abel. (*Violence and the Sacred* by Rene Girard. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins, 1977. ISBN: 0-8018-2218-1) Cain is the firstborn. He kills Abel, the second-born. The story of Cain and Abel is retold by John Steinbeck in his novel, "East of Eden." Many have seen the movie, but few have read the book, a much deeper account. In Steinbeck's retelling, Abel kills Cain! Says Boris Paternak in his novel, "Dr. Zhivago": give me a man's brother and we're halfway to getting the man. Brother will betray brother. The true nature of revolution is revealed in a recent book by Frank J. Sulloway, "Born To Rebel." (New York: Random House, 1996. ISBN: 0-679-44232-4.) Sulloway argues that rebelliousness is statistically discernable by Darwinian niche. Darwinian niche means sibling order, firstborn versus later-born. Rejected by Sulloway: Freudian nonsense that there is an Oedipus Complex. "Freud's notion of the Oedipus complex makes little sense in a Darwinian world. Offspring are not trying to kill one parent in order to take sole possession of the other. Childhood is about maximizing parental investment, not reducing it by half." Rejected by Sulloway: "Marxist claims about class conflict as the engine of history." The basic conflict originates between siblings, vying for parental investment. From there it ramifies; the primal conflict re-occurs during a lifetime, in other forms. Statistical evidence that the true revolutionaries tend to be the later borns; that the first-borns tend to identify with authority. Bill Clinton is a first born; Roger Clinton is a later-born. Sherman Skolnick is a later-born. The CNNS editor is a later-born. All of our fussing and fighting is just a re-enactment of the primal situation, in a sense. The true progressives, statistically and historically, are the later-borns, according to Sulloway's research. Is Chip Berlet a firstborn or a later-born? Later-borns: more open to new ideas. Firstborns: identify with authority.
