THE CURRENT UNPLEASANTNESS

DEADBEAT DAD? Is Bill Clinton a deadbeat dad? The question has arisen again
because of the availability (thanks to the Starr report) of stats on the First
Molecule. The issue was first raised during the 1992 New Hampshire primary in
an article in the Globe, but was quickly buried by the rest of the media even
though the woman involved had passed a lie detector test. The story was that
Clinton had a child by an Arkansas prostitute with whom he had engaged in both
group and more intimate sex. The campaign staff refused to comment on the
matter and advance folk literally ran ahead of Hillary Clinton removing all
copies of the paper that might fall into her field of vision.

(One of those who would have been expected to know about the story was
Newsweek's Joe Klein, but he denies having heard about it or using it as the
inspiration for the plot of "Primary Colors.")

The story lay fairly dormant until the matter of the blue dress arose, with
its subsequent examination for DNA residue. Now purported son Danny Williams
has taken a DNA test at the urging of the Star's Richard Gooding, the same
reporter who uncovered Dick Morris' interesting relationship with a prostitute
and her feet. The results will soon be known.

This has been reported by the Star, Matt Drudge, the New York Post, and even
the BBC (which leads with the item at its on-line site) but our leading news
nannies, the New York Times and Washington Post, are still keeping the matter
from their readers.

RAPE STORY: In the establishment media, at least, the lid is also still on
evidence concerning an alleged rape by Clinton in 1978 -- contained in the
censored portion of the Starr report -- that continues to play a big role in
the behind-the-scenes struggle over how the Senate will respond to
impeachment. Journalists know about the situation, know it affected the House
vote on impeachment, yet won't let readers and viewers in on the secret. As a
result they prattle on about constitutional issues that are of tertiary
concern to the real politics of the situation. The true struggle is not over
constitutional principles but over exactly how much of Clinton's past is going
to be exposed to public view. For example, Henry Hyde reportedly would like to
call as witnesses five Jane Does who signed false affidavits in the Jones
case. The Clintonistas desperately want to avoid this.

MORE OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE? If there is a Senate trial, among the witnesses
should be those shamuses who have fanned out around the country trying to find
dirt on Republican legislators, such as the ones reported rummaging around in
Trent Lott's home town. There is at least circumstantial evidence that
Clinton's obstruction of justice continues right to the present as the White
House pursues its scorched earth policy.

THE BUSH QUESTION: One ex-president has been unusually quiet during this time
of national trouble. Initially, we wrote off Big George's behavior as that of
a thoughtful dad, since the last thing little George needed was pops popping
off with another misplaced sound bite. But several things hint that more may
be afoot. For example: why did Clinton release an important portion of the CIA
& Drugs report right in the middle of his impeachment crisis? Was the CIA
report a shot across the bow -- a reminder to Big George of how much the
agency and Clinton know about Bush's role in the CIA/Contra/drug operations in
Arkansas?

And why, despite Little George's lead in the polls, did Senators Smith and
McCain suddenly jumped into the presidential race, and Elizabeth Dole resign
her Red Cross post as though she's ready to move, too? What do they know that
we don't? Stay tuned.

SPEAKING OF BUSH

The South China Post is reporting that a powerful faction of Beijing's foreign
policy establishment hopes Texas Governor George Bush wins the race for the
White House in late 2000. They're worried about Gore's chances. Says the Post:
"Many cadres and scholars thought Mr. Bush, son of former US president George
Bush, might increase Sino-US ties if he became president." That's gratitude
for you.

WHERE TO FIND A CHICAGO ALDERMAN

We recently described US Senators as "scurrying around trying to fix the trial
like they were Chicago aldermen at traffic court." Reader Dan Johnson-
Weinberger took umbrage, writing, "Hey, now wait a minute! I'm in Chicago and
I've been to traffic court, and those aldermen are nowhere to be seen. You
might have meant Chicago aldermen at a zoning hearing, where each aldermen is
lord over his ward and 'aldermanic privilege' creates this feudal reciprocity
of leaving every other ward along. Traffic court, though, is relatively
alderman-free."

THE POST-MODERN DICTIONARY

ANTI-GOVERNMENT GROUPS: Term used by FDIC official to describe those who
oppose the agency's plan to force banks to snoop on customer's checking
transactions for the federal government.
