MEDIA QUESTIONS OF THE DAY Why are media heads like John Hockenberry so respectful of establishment politicians but suddenly act like hard-hitting investigative reporters when interviewing people like Jesse Ventura? Don't they know any hard questions to ask of Republicans and Democrats? ` Does Reuters consider it objective reporting to write that "Jerry Brown, California's one-time "Governor Moonbeam," a three-time U.S. presidential candidate and a full-time national gadfly, took political wing again Monday as he was inaugurated mayor of Oakland?" Does Reuters have any idea of what sort of governor Brown actually was? Or that he got the nickname "Moonbeam" for suggesting a satellite hookup for the state's universities of the sort now available to every cable television consumer? Or that if Jerry Brown had been elected president it would be highly unlikely that we would be engaged in a sordid Senate trial of the president? Does the Washington Post's Jon Jeter know what the word "quixotic" means? If so why did he write, "Ventura's quixotic third party campaign. . . electrified this state." (Jeter has some other odd notions; he judged a temperature that "did not rise above zero" to be "unimaginably cold weather." Finally, isn't it time for the mediacrats to grow up and start treating those in other than the two corrupt major parties as something more than barely disguised freaks? DUMB SPIES AT LARGE AGAIN News that both the CIA and NSA used UNSCOM facilities to tap into Saddam Hussein's secret communications facilities provides further evidence of the dubious intelligence of the nation's intelligence agencies. As one UN official told the Washington Post, "The United Nations cannot be party to an operation to overthrow one of its member states." NBC reports that one UN official told it that Richard Butler, UNSCOM's chief weapons inspector, had "built himself the world's biggest doghouse." Not only was the US involved in a scheme sure to discredit the United Nations when uncovered, but so were the British, Australians and Israelis. The Post, which broke the story, apparently only did so after UN Secretary General Kofi Annan decided to make an issue of it. The Post had the story several months ago, but did not run it for "national security reasons" after being pressured by Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, NSC director Sandy Berger and CIA director George Tenet. A UN adviser said that Annan "would like to see the news media report this, and let the chips fall where they may." Now California's new governor has come up with a approach to state college admissions that may lower the rant level on the subject. His idea: guarantee admission to the top four percent of students at each high school in the state. Instead of selecting applicants by statewide standards, the new plan would ensure that poor and rural white students as well as ethnic minorities got a better chance than they do now thanks to the state's retreat from affirmative action. There has been a ten percent decline in the enrollment of blacks, latinos and American Indians since the UC Board of Regents banned affirmative action in 1995. EURO JUSTICE In the first story of this sort we've seen, two defendants have been ordered to pay a fine -- in euros. The two "pastry terrorists" threw a custard pie in the face of Bill Gates, thus committing a crime known in Belgium as "mild violence." They were charged 75 euros. A web manifesto on pastry terrorism says that if Gates wants to avoid more pies, he should give part of his salary to the Zapatista rebels.
