Kris:

Suddenly tonight I spied the American Indian population book in my book
case in passing referred to in your inquiry last night. It is Russell
Thornton's *American Indian Holocaust and Survival, A Population History
Since 1492,* Univ. Of OK Press, Norman, 1987. Thornton is exhaustive,
putting together in this book all of the known, relevant population
histories accumulated by some 20 -- 20th century American
anthropologists. This includes: River (1924), Sapper (1924), Spinden
(1928), Wilcox (1931), Kroeber (1939), ---- up to Dobyns (1966), Driver
(1969), and Denevan (1976) -- as well as others. Thornton's chart on
page 26 lists the estimates as ranging from the lower end of the scale
with Kroeber (1939) at some 9,000,000 Indians to the highest estimate
12,000,000 Dobyns (1966) with Dobyns being considered by far the more
inflationary scholar. The chart is actually solidly placed as far as
estimates go -- all the scholars except for Dobyns fall within the range
of 1-3 million indigenous population in North America in A.D. 1500 with
nearly 8 of the scholars citing a figure at about one million maximum.
North America is defined as including Canada, U.S., and Arctic.

So -- I stand corrected on this -- funny how I forgot I had this book at
home. And, even my lectures, where I usually cited a figure of about 3
million Indians in North America because I wanted to error on the side
of "Indian thought." But it has been awhile.

My best, Judith
