Thanks, Robert Sterling Editor, The Konformist http://www.konformist.com Date: Tuesday, December 08, 1998 01:28:02 PM From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subj: Jesse Ventura (the next POTUS?) Please take a look at the info for the most exciting politician in America today. Can you imagine an ex Navy SEAL, Vietnam Veteran, as our next President? I will bet that if Jesse becomes POTUS, the US Military will go after the POW/MIA's. I have heard that on Inauguration Day in Minnesota, Jesse is going to rappel out of a chopper onto the dome of the State Capitol building. Minnesota had a 61% voter turnout in the recent election, (the highest in the nation). He has fired up the younger generation and the fat-cat Politicos are scared to death of him, because he is so honest. Details were announced today (Monday). The Channel 4000 web site has info posted now. Tickets go on sale through Ticketmaster tomorrow ($10, $15 and $20). They are likely to go fast. If you want in, move now. We're going to rock the world on January 16 at the Target Center. This is no ordinary Inaugural Ball. Jonny Lang and other bands will be playing. Thousands of ordinary citizens will be in attendance. No need to rent a tux or buy a new dress. Your best pair of Levi's will do just fine. Retaliate In '98! Redefine In '99! ------------------------------------------- VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION PARTY On Sunday, December 13, Jesse and Mae hosted a volunteer appreciation party at Planet Hollywood in the Mall of America. Invited to this event were volunteers who were known to have gone the extra mile to help elect for Jesse and Mae. About 200 people attended. We estimate that most people in the room gave at least 80 volunteer hours to the campaign. Many put in over 800 hours. This is the first time since election night the campaign leaders and volunteers had a chance to party with Jesse and Mae. It was an uplifting experience for all in attendance. It was great to see each other again. Partying is something Ventura/Schunk supporters like to do. (if you doubt it, review the election night stories and footage!). We want to be sure to maintain our partying skills over the next four years. Look for more volunteer events and parties to occur in the future. Back when Jesse was thinking about getting into the race for governor, he specified fun as a necessary condition. He insisted that we have fun even as we worked hard on the campaign. The result is he attracted and now has a fun-loving core of highly motivated volunteers. Party! Party! Party! JESSE'S REMARKS TO THE VENTURA/SCHUNK VOLUNTEERS At Sunday's event, Jesse spoke briefly to the volunteers. He began by thanking them for the victory they helped produce with very little money (with less than $500,000 we defeated $15,000,000 in combined opposition!). Jesse then talked about the ton of work there is to do as he and Mae prepare to take office. He pointed out that while the volunteers got to rest after the campaign, he, his wife Terry and running mate Mae Schunk had to keep going. Jesse and Terry just returned from a short, private vacation in Florida where they got some much-needed rest. The volunteers cheered when Jesse said he's not ruling out a run for re-election four years from now. He said, "Keep some part of you in this. If we do it again - and I'm emphasizing 'if' - we want to hit the ground running." At one of his press conferences shortly after the election, Jesse said he will keep his campaign committee running as a live entity, "...in case the job isn't finished four years from now." These days, Jesse is focused on transition work more than anything else. The campaign committee has been quiet for the most part. Looking ahead, the www.jesseventura.org campaign web site will stay up and active for the next four years. We will also continue to expand and service the Jesse Net. On election day, we had about 3,000 Jesse Net members. A few days later, we had 4,500. People continue to sign up. It won't be long before we top 5,000. We have many times that number of supporters in our campaign database. The Jesse Net is just the list of people we communicate with via the Internet. Also note that the above numbers refer to unique e-mail addresses. If you figure 5,000 households and employee groups receive these Jesse Net messages, our online force of individual Ventura/Schunk supporters is larger than the number of unique e-mail addresses we have on file. The Jesse Net will serve as an online, grass-roots political power base that Jesse and Mae can mobilize to help move items through the legislature. >From time to time, Jesse and Mae may need you to lean a little on your State Senator and Representative to help move a good bill through the legislature for Jesse to sign. We may also call on you to help stop a stupid bill dead in its tracks. As Jesse Net members grow in number and skill, we hope the career politicians in the legislature will begin to think twice before playing their tired old partisan games. With Jesse and Mae leading the way, we hope to improve the way the political game is played in Minnesota. The official name of the campaign committee is "Jesse Ventura For Governor Volunteer Committee." Look for the "Ventura Volunteer Committee" part of the name to be emphasized in the coming months. Since the next gubernatorial election is four years away, there's not much campaigning to do. We don't even know if Jesse will run again. All we know for sure is that he has not ruled it out. We also know that Jesse and Mae will need the ongoing support of their grass-roots volunteers to help them govern in the months and years ahead. We're encouraging all volunteers in general and Jesse Net volunteers in particular to stay in touch. We'll have lots of important work to do in the coming months and years. Watch for more about this in upcoming Jesse Net messages. For now, please stay in touch and encourage the Ventura/Schunk supporters you know to sign up as Jesse Net members. The URL for doing so is: http://www.jesseventura.org/joinjnet.htm JESSE FOR PRESIDENT...NOT! People continue to ask if Jesse will run for president in 2000. His answer is firm and crystal clear. The answer is NO. He has stated this many times in public and says the same thing in private when talking with his staff. He has no desire or intention to run for president. Jesse has promised to serve the people of Minnesota as their governor for the next four years and he intends to do exactly that. ACTION FIGURES, BUTTONS, T-SHIRTS, ETC. Inquiries continue to pour in about Jesse Ventura action figures and other campaign merchandise. The Ventura camp intends to make these items available but a lot of legal work must first be done. Because Jesse is the Governor-elect and the Ventura Volunteer Committee is a political committee, campaign finance laws apply to us that do not apply to commercial vendors. When these laws were being drafted, no legislator thought, "What if we have a governor who wants to finance his political endeavors by rejecting all PAC money and selling dolls instead?" There are many merchandise-related things people would like to see Jesse do that are not addressed in current campaign finance law. We're moving forward, but we're also being careful to stay on the right side of the law. Once Jesse's lawyers get things worked out, expect to see action figures and other official Jesse Ventura items available for purchase. E-MAIL, E-MAIL, E-MAIL We're still digging out from the thousands of e-mail messages we received on and near election day. During most of the campaign, we were able to keep up with most of the e-mail we received. As election day approached, our e-mail traffic picked up and available staff time got scarce. After election day, we were hopelessly buried by thousands of messages. While things have slowed down, e-mail volume is still much higher than it was during the campaign. Dealing with the higher volume of e-mail is a problem we have not yet solved. Governor offices in other states advise that an e-mail message should be printed and treated the same as a letter sent through the post office. They warn that if you respond to an e-mail message, the citizen often responds back. Then you respond, and the citizen responds again. And in no time at all, you can easily have 10 or 20 citizens, who have all day to do it, talking happily on line with the governor's office about whatever is on their mind. That's a great concept from a citizen's point of view. But from a taxpayer's point of view, not much value is derived from with the tax dollars used to pay the staff. Few taxpayers want to see 20 state employees spending their days sending e-mail back and forth to only a slightly higher number of citizens. On the other hand, part of what made the Ventura/Schunk victory possible was the highly interactive relationship we maintained with Jesse's and Mae's supporters. But now that Jesse and Mae belong to the entire State and not just the campaign committee, we are facing new challenges in maintaining such a relationship. The idea of simply printing out your e-mail messages and throwing them in a pile that Jesse and Mae will seldom see does not sit well with us. We're still thinking this one through. For now, please accept our apologies for our inability to keep up with the flood of e-mail that hit us. We're open to suggestions on how to communicate with a continually growing support base without losing the personal connection Jesse's and Mae's supporters enjoyed during the campaign. We received a lot of praise for the tell-it-like-it-is style of the Jesse Net messages. That style will continue. Hopefully we'll figure out a better way to service your e-mail as it continues to pour in. We have adjustments to make now that Jesse and Mae are serving all Minnesotans. Even if we placed their e-mail and snail-mail letters in Jesse's and Mae's hands, it would take them days to read and respond to just one day's incoming batch. Such is the price of success. Everyone wants to be close to Jesse and Mae, and no one gets to be as close as we used to be before they were elected. Finally, please note that the Governor-elect's transition office and the Governor-elect's volunteer committee are two different things. The Jesse Net and the www.jesseventura.org web site are components of the volunteer committee. The address for the transition office is: Governor-elect Ventura's Office B5 Capitol Building 75 Constitution Avenue St. Paul, MN 55155 Please send all job inquiries to the transition office. HOW DO I GET TICKETS FOR THE INAUGURAL BALL? That's the question of the hour! Few details about the Jesse's inaugural plans have been released. We can tell you that the inauguration itself (brief oath of office ceremony) will occur at the State Capitol Building on January 4. Seating will be limited and by invitation only. The big event will occur at the Target Center on January 15. No band has yet been named. Tickets will be available through Ticket Master. It's not your traditional inaugural ball, but then Jesse's not your traditional career politician! Watch the www.jesseventura.org web site for more information on inauguration events. COME OUT, COME OUT, WHEREVER YOU ARE! Fun was has by all at Sunday's volunteer appreciation event. Yet we're haunted by the knowledge that there are a lot of people out there that worked hard for Jesse without ever formally contacting the campaign committee. For example, we recently learned of a gentleman who promoted Jesse through a telephone network of friends and business associates he has maintained for years. His efforts probably produced dozens of votes for Jesse. If you are one of those unsung heroes, we want to know who you are. Please drop us a line and tell us how you helped Jesse during the campaign. If you put in over 80 hours of personal time to help elect Jesse, and you were not invited to last night's event, please contact us. We want to make sure you're in the loop of Ventura/Schunk Super Volunteers. MANY THANKS As always, thank you for your support. You helped shock the world on election night. Let's keep it going as Jesse and Mae prepare to serve as our Governor and Lt.
