A wonderful book is available on the Internet called "The Man Who Tapped
the Secrets of the Universe" It can be found at www.philosophy.org in
that site's "library" section. Other books of value are available by
order. The book is about Walter Russell, an artist of many and varied
accomplishments. He taught that "genius is self bestowed and mediocraty
is self-inflicted". He also taught that what Edwin Markham said was
true: "In
vain do we build the city if we do not first build the man."
Not long ago I related the story of my difficulties with my composition
teacher which resulted in my leaving school without graduating. In large
measure this difficulty was derived from my studies of Russell's work.
It changed forever my mental process. The result was music which was not
acceptable to my teacher. I also related how this music, "Pilgrims
Progress" was eventually successfully performed. In response one of the
listers who happened to have been at that performance 21 years ago
remembered the music and asserted that I was a genius. If there is any
truth to that, I would have to ascribe it to to the works I have read
and pondered by this great man.

Another book I recommend is titled "Ye Are Gods" by Annalee Skarin which
is based upon this passage from the Bible.
And while I have your attention. I just saw the movie "Life is
Beautiful" and I recommend it greatly.
