-Caveat Lector- Real News Lurks Behind The Scenes Of "Living History" ===================================================== (CNNS, 01/10/99) -- Pomp and circumstance prevailed last week as members of the U.S. House and Senate became convinced that "the eyes of history are upon us." Much of the public was fooled as well. "Wow. We are watching history," many were led to think. Playing along was the U.S. mass media. Their ratings strategy for the week was to lure viewers by replacing hard news with "living history." So, this news service complained, "What Are They Up To?" (CNNS, 1/7/99.) In the absence of real news, we were forced to beg our readers to send us their own information. Finally, exasperated by the "living history" and no real news, CNNS turned in desperation to three unemployed philosophers. They, thankfully, provided some insight. As Steve Dunleavy wrote in a commentary in the New York Post, "It's a wonder that the Vatican is not already planning canonization for the entire U.S. Senate." ["It's A Dirty Job," by Steve Dunleavy. NYP 1/10/99.] Inflated with the misperception that people actually read history books, Senators and Congresspersons acted and spoke as if an interested future was really glued to their every word. Adding his own fashion statement to the "historic moment" was Chief Justice William Rehnquist, who doffed a daring new style of striped judicial robe for the occasion. No one reads history books. Everyone knows that, even the historians, who say, "What we learn from history is that no one learns from history." So what was all this "eyes of history" mania about? What they ought to have said was: "The eyes of the honorable ancestors are upon us." It's the eyes of the past, not the eyes of the future, which are watching the Senators and Congresspersons. But watch out when there is (seemingly) "no news." When there is "no news," that means there is a =lot= of news that they aren't reporting. A barrage of news has exploded, these past 24 hours. Behind The Scenes: Sherman Skolnick reports that Hillary Rodham Clinton and/or her agents have been sending faxes to House and Senate members, reminding them all about how much money they have received from Red China. Behind The Scenes: Reports are circulating that controversial figure Larry Flynt is a "cut out," serving as go-between for classified FBI files controlled by the White House. The White House itself cannot directly dirty its hands by openly leaking embarrassing information about certain "Congress Critters." Allegedly facilitating these latest dirty tricks is Clinton team-player James Carville. Behind The Scenes: James Carville, whose eyes seem lizard-like to this editor, is also reportedly part of a team seeking to unseat Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. According to a commentary in the New York Post, Carville, Stan Greenberg, and Robert Shrum, the "spin masters of President Clinton and British Prime Minister Tony Blair," are lending their sloganeering expertise to the candidacy of Ehud Barak, who opposes Netanyahu in Israel's upcoming election. ["Bibi Battered By Bill's Boys' Barbs," NYP, 1/10/99] The "Living History" soporific, used as a replacement for real news last week, will not be the theme of this week's news coverage. Darn.
