-Caveat Lector- REHNQUIST STRUTS LATEST STYLE IN JUDICIAL ROBES =============================================== (CNNS, 01/12/99) -- The fashion world is abuzz this spring governmental season; all are talking about Chief Judge William Rehnquist's daring new style in judicial wear. Rehnquist's new outfit is a simple, one-piece affair, sporting provocative stripes on each sleeve. It is rumored that Henry Hyde, head of the team of prosecutors in the developing impeachment trial, will himself don a Tudor-style cap for the occasion. This rumor is unconfirmed as we go to press. But with last week's premiere, by Rehnquist, of the *haute couture*, striped-sleeve judicial garment, some are wondering about a possible hidden significance beneath the surface of an apparently innocent fashion statement. Is there some deeper meaning behind Rehnquist's sporty new style in judicial wear? Contacted by this news service, Sherman Skolnick, chairman of the Chicago-based public interest research group, Citizens' Committee To Clean Up The Courts, speculated that Judge Rehnquist's fashionable new robes might be a return to an older style of judicial wear. According to Skolnick's recollection, a similar striped-sleeve judicial robe was worn by judges in Nazi Germany. "Is it fashion, or fascism?" he asks. This news service agrees that the striped-robe fashion may be a resurrection of style: if our memory serves us, striped-robes were worn by judges during the Nuremberg Trials, which prosecuted Nazi war criminals. However, the Nuremberg Trials were post-World War II, and so Rehnquist's new robe has less of a Nazi connotation than Skolnick suggests. Another theory is that Rehnquist is copying the fashion of robes worn by the World Court, at the Hague. If such is the case, two explanations come to mind: (1) Americans are slavish to European fashions, and Rehnquist does not want to appear tacky to his European peers; (2) Rehnquist's striped-sleeve fashion statement is a subtle indicator that American jurisprudence is moving toward an "international motif," symbolized by the new judicial wear. Why has Judge Rehnquist changed the style of his judicial robes? You tell me. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + INFORMATION PLEASE: Conspiracy Nation News Service (CNNS) is a co-operative effort.
