If the perpetrator made some statement before committing the crime
which indicated that he was justifying his action because the person who
he is stealing from is "rich" would it then be understandable to call it
a hate crime? If not, why not? I was once mugged by a couple of guys.
They pretended to be a little drunk and asked me for directions. I tried
to help them out as best I could. One of them very expertly put a knife
to my throat. Then he turned the weapon over to his partner, who held it
to the back of my neck. The leader made several statements indicating
that he thought I was "rich" and had in some way taken advantage of him
and thus owed him. Was this a "hate crime"?
In the case that was mentioned of the two guys who murdered the gay
student, I believe that one was enraged when the gay student made a pass
at him. (Interestingly, one of my friends who was gay told me that
before he "came out" he used to get very incensed at homosexuals and I
can imagine the possibility that this might have been a hidden dynamic
in this occurance. Remember the murder was committed by two guys and one
female. Think about it). So, you have a guy who get enraged and then
gets his buddy to join him in this emotion. The girl tags along. Is this
a "hate crime"? Did they target this guy because he was gay or because
he did something "gay" which blew this guy's mind?
