:
: OBSESSED WITH SEX SCANDAL,
: REPORTERS IGNORE MAJORITY LEADER'S PUBLIC SCANDAL
:
: Washington Post Reporter & Columnists Take up Slack
:
: While reporters spent most of 1998 covering a presidential
: scandal--which consisted of a sexual affair and deceptive statements
: made to cover it up--a public scandal involving Senate Majority Leader
: Trent Lott, including deceptive statements by Lott's office, has managed
: to avoid coverage by most national news reporters.
:
: Despite Lott's increased importance as the Senate impeachment trial
: begins, the Washington Post's Thomas B. Edsall stands alone among
: national reporters investigating Lott's long-term ties to a racist
: organization. Though several columnists have also written on the
: scandal-notably Stanley Crouch of the New York Daily News and Colbert I.
: King of the Washington Post-so far, no TV network has covered the story.
: (FAIR has provided documentation on this story to several journalists,
: including Edsall and Crouch.)
:
: Furthermore, Lott has misled the public through his spokesman. One month
: ago, when reporters raised questions about Sen. Lott's ties to the
: Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC), Lott's press secretary, John
: Czwartacki, told the L.A. Times (12/13/98) that Lott "vaguely"
: remembered speaking to the group "over a decade ago" before he was a
: senator. He added that Lott "doesn't consider himself a member. Nor does
: he have first-hand familiarity or knowledge of their views."
:
: The record, however, casts doubt on Lott's account, and his claim he had
: no "first-hand knowledge" of the CCC. Here's what's known:
:
: 1997: Lott holds a private meeting with the CCC in his DC office
: 1997: Lott endorsement of the CCC is circulated in the group's
: literature
: 1995: Lott addresses the Mississippi chapter of the CCC
: 1992: Lott praises the group as keynote speaker at the CCC's national
: convention
: 1991: Lott addresses the Mississippi chapter of the CCC
: 1989: Lott appears in CCC publication Citizens Informer with his uncle,
: a CCC executive, and cousin, a member
: 1990-1998: The Citizens Informer publishes Senator Lott's column
:
: Though his press secretary told the Washington Post (12/16/98) Lott now
: repudiates the CCC, serious questions remain unanswered and *no
: reporter* has interviewed the Majority Leader *directly* on his
: involvement with the group. FAIR's Program Director, Janine Jackson
: commented, "This story is about a powerful elected official and his
: public associations; journalists owe it to the public to give it the
: serious treatment it deserves. African-Americans in particular have a
: right to ask why questions of racism among the powerful don't rise to
: the level of the newsworthy."
:
: (For a record of the CCC's bigotry, see FAIR's web updates at
: http://www.fair.org/press-releases/lott-update.html or visit the Temple
: of Democracy web site at: http://www.anet-dfw.com/~crawfsh/CofCC.htm , or
