Texas Board of Health approves proposed new rules for ephedrine
The Texas Board of Health has given initial approval to a new set of rules
that would require a warning label for most products containing ephedrine,
an ingredient in many popular dietary supplements used for weight loss or to
boost energy levels. Ephedrine is a stimulant found naturally in ma huang, a
group of Chinese herbs. Ephedrine also can be chemically manufactured or
synthesized. The rules would prohibit the use of synthetic ephedrine in the
dietary and energy-boosting products.

Calcium may reduce heart attack risk
*******************************************
A high daily intake of calcium may protect against heart disease and heart
attack, University of South Carolina researchers conclude.

But they also report that fat-containing milk products and vitamin D do not
appear to offer this benefit. According to their study, published in the
American Journal of Epidemiology, ''calcium, but not milk products... may
reduce the risk of death due to ischemic heart disease.''

Mineral supplements linked to
fewer polyps, study says
****************************************
Taking calcium supplements each day may help prevent colorectal cancer from
recurring, a new study suggests. But the effect of the mineral is moderate,
and it remains unclear whether taking calcium supplements can prevent polyps
from appearing in the first place, researchers report. How calcium may
prevent colorectal cancer is unclear.

Patch Adams' hospital isn't looking too healthy
*****************************************************
The hit Robin Williams movie "Patch Adams'' ends on a feel-good note, with
the audience told that construction of a free hospital is under way in West
Virginia.

That's Hollywood. In the mountains of West Virginia, the project exists
mostly in the imagination. There is no hospital, just a hodgepodge of
buildings, some half-finished.

Stating safety concerns, FDA wants more money
********************************************************
The Clinton administration is seeking to infuse more cash into the agency
that monitors the safety of food and drugs because of worries it's losing
the ability to fully safeguard Americans' health. The Food and Drug
Administration says it's $165 million in the hole because of six years of
budgets that didn't keep up with inflation. It's short 500 employees, and
needs more specialized scientists to evaluate increasingly complex
therapies. Its inspectors can check the safety of only a fraction of medical
and food factories every year. And its research, which helps ensure new
products are safe, has been slashed.

Pharmacy school to honor Dr. Weil
****************************************
The Massachusetts College of Pharmacy is challenging the views of much of
the medical establishment by awarding an honorary doctorate to Dr. Andrew
Weil, the guru who has successfully promoted alternative remedies such as
acupuncture and chamomile tea.

Dr. Jerome Kassirer, editor in chief of the New England Journal of Medicine,
said the college's decision to honor Weil inappropriately legitimizes Weil's
points of view.
