I'm sure that Kris would like to say that the secret societies are more in charge than you would allow here, and I would agree with him at least a little ;) but there is truth in both scenarios. I for one believe that there IS an overarching group of controllers, if you will, that does indeed run the show, but they are completely hidden (at least their affiliations are, heck you may even know one of them, or be on of them for all I know). The other groups, or types you have identified are going about their own agendas thinking that they are the REAL elites, but they are subtly being manipulated by the TRUE hidden rulers. Sometimes there are competing theses, etc., but in the end the will of the true masters is always served. Too much time around for such NOT to have developed, and as for origins I look at least as far back as ancient Egypt, the priesthood which guarded all of the technology and information from the uninitiated.
