Brian,

Thanks for the following article. Still, I can't find the Smoking Gun on the
connection between Klinton and Flynt, and suspect that the connection may not
be conspiratorial but mutual interests that are not secretive at all. Compare
that to the Peckergate scandal, where Matt Drudge clearly has been fed his
"scoop" from higher up operatives that were using him as a tool. Flynt is a
tool for nobody but himself (as anyone who does business with him will
certainly attest.) Further, if there is a Vast Left Wing Conspiracy, who is
Mr. Big? Larry Flynt? James Carville? These guys are chump change compared
to Richard Mellon Scaife. As the saying goes, "Show me the money."

A sidenote that is quite relevant: I have spoken to Flynt's people at Hustler
over the million dollar offer, as I currently have some rather juicy goods on
a GOP senator sex scandal. My information was received before the Flynt offer
(as well as before Peckergate shot it's wad this summer) and thus was entirely
independent of this. I suspect that this is how the Flynt operation is going:
not from the top down (which is how the VRWC has worked, where Scaife supplies
the funds, Tripp-Goldberg get the ammo, and Drudge spurts out the results) but
the bottom up (individuals, both disgusted by the cynical hypocricy of the
Peckergate Circus and/or lured by shameless greed, tell all to Flynt, who then
uses it to publicize Hustler and thus secondarily defend Slick Willie.)

A little more info: Flynt, as you've detailed in Con Nation, has a history of
hell-raising against the establishment (being a chief promoter of conspiracy
investigation when it wasn't hip), which probably has more to do with his
persecution by Falwell, S&L swindler Charles Keating, and the assassination
attempt against him that left him paralyzed (the man who shot him also shot at
Vernon Jordan) than his promotion of ultra-pink beavers. Considering the
harassment he's received from the business establishment and far right for his
mag, I can sympathize with Flynt's decision on who he is in bed with
politically.

Further, as you point out, Carville's Polling/PR Firm has been burglarized
twice in a week. Today, a bogus news story (uncovered as bogus by Clay
Douglas of The Free American) was forwarded by some on the internet -
including yourself in honest error - accusing Carville of domestic violence,
firing a pistol and brandishing a knife during a fight with his wife.
Clearly, both sides in this battle are up to Nixonian Watergate shenanigans
(as I'm sure you're well aware.) Though it isn't popular to say in some
circles, I have a soft spot for ol' serpent head. Political consultants are
the ones that always seem to spill the beans when they leave, which may be why
George Bush's consultant Lee Atwater quickly died of a brain tumor soon after
the '88 election. Keep your eyes - and ears - on Carvile.

One last thing: I'm still waiting for someone else to point out the
signifigance that Bob Barr, the rabid attack dog in this case, is a self-
professed "former" CIA agent.

Thanks,

Robert Sterling

DOTS CONNECTED BETWEEN CLINTON, FLYNT
=====================================
(CNNS, 01/22/99) -- Information contained in secret FBI files
which are in the possession of the White House cannot be openly
handed to the press. Were the White House to openly do so, in
hopes of tarnishing the reputations of some Republicans now
contending with the Clinton administration, there would be a
backlash against the Clinton White House.

Earlier this year, responding to continual exposes of
questionable conduct by President Bill Clinton, James Carville,
pit bull for Bill Clinton and his entourage, exclaimed, "This
means war!"

As pointed out by "Ru Mills" (pseudonym), "When this White House
says 'war', they mean it."

Former top-level Clinton aide, George Stephanopolous, hinted at
White House strategy likely to be utilized as counter-attack
against Republican opponents: "The Ellen Romesch Strategy."
That strategy would be a mutually assured destruction of
blackmail cards held by each of the opposing political camps.
For example, if the Republicans play a "Jane Doe #5 card," the
Democrats counter with a "Bob Barr extra-marital card." Two
things can happen: (1) all out "war," with an explosion of
scandals and counter-scandals, or (2) a "Mexican stand-off": a
mutually assured destruction of potential scandals causes each
side to hold their fire.

A report in the commentary section of today's New York Post gives
substantive background on characters operating in the Bill
Clinton camp. ("A Vast Left-Wing Conspiracy?" by Sam Dealey.
NYPost, 1/22/99.) The information is tantalizing, and connecting
the dots between the various characters is provocative.

Here, in a nutshell, are the "Cast of Characters":

JAMES CARVILLE: Carville, together with associates Stan
Greenberg and Robert Shrum, have been meddling in Israel's
politics. They seek to influence the upcoming Israeli election
and thereby oust Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's prime minister, who
is not favored by the Clintonites. ("Bibi Battered By Bill's
Boys' Barbs," NYPost, 1/10/99.) In an apparent counter-move, the
Washington, DC office of Stan Greenberg was recently burglarized,
and then re-burglarized, apparently by forces favoring Netanyahu.
The Clinton/Netanyahu feud is one aspect worthy of notice.
Another tantalizing tidbit, offered by Dealey in his NYPost
article of Jan. 22, 1999, is that Carville is a friend of Larry
Flynt, publisher of Hustler magazine, and that they worked on a
movie together. Flynt may have served as intermediary between
the Clinton White House and the press, when he released
allegations suggesting that Rep. Bob Barr had once had an
extra-marital affair.

STROBE TALBOTT: He is a long-time close friend of Bill Clinton.
Talbott currently is Deputy Secretary of State. According to
Larry Flynt, Talbott "is married to a sister of a very good
friend of mine."

CODY SHEARER: He is Larry Flynt's "very good friend." Cody
Shearer's sister is married to Strobe Talbott. Shearer is "a
former business associate of Terry Lenzner," as well as an old
tennis buddy of Lenzner's.

TERRY LENZNER: He is a private detective, employed by the
Clinton's. Lenzner and others have been sometimes referred to as
"the White House's Secret Police." Lenzner has been on the
payroll of Bill Clinton's personal attorneys since 1994,
according to Dealey's NYPost article.

BROOKE SHEARER TALBOTT: She is married to Strobe Talbott.
Brooke has been close friends with Hillary Clinton since their
college days. Brooke used to work for private eye Terry Lenzner.

DEREK SHEARER: He is brother of Brooke and Cody Shearer. Derek
is an old Oxford chum of Bill Clinton. Currently, Derek Shearer
is U.S. Ambassador to Finland. Before that, he worked in the
U.S. Commerce Department, during the Clinton administration.

                        A VAST LEFT-WING CONSPIRACY?

                                By SAM DEALEY
       ______________________________________________________________
WHEN Larry Flynt went public with the ''hypocrisy'' of Rep. Bob
Barr, exposing him as a past adulterer and one of the ''biggest
horn dogs in Congress,'' the Georgia Republican seemed certain the
White House was in part behind the matter. ''I don't think that one
can look at this situation with the close ties ... between the
private investigators, the White House, between Sidney Blumenthal
and these folks on the outside and come away with any other
reasonable conclusion other than the fact that this is part of an
overall scheme,'' Barr said. Other Republicans chimed in.

But, as it has with similar charges these past few months, the
White House denied the allegations and demanded that Republicans
produce proof. ''If they've got evidence, they ought to bring it
forward,'' said presidential spokesman Joe Lockhart. ''If not, they
     ought to knock it off.''

Reporters, too, questioned whether the president's inner circle was
passing on dirt. Were White House aides involved? they asked Flynt.
''The only connection that I have got with Bill Clinton is that I
voted for him twice. I've never met the man. I've never been to the
White House.'' Presidential pit-bull James Carville? ''Well of
course I am friends with James, we made a movie together ... But
I've never discussed what I am doing with James.'' How about
     Clinton dirt-digger Terry Lenzner? ''No.''

But asked if he knew Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott,
Flynt said, ''I haven't seen Strobe Talbott in years. ... But he is
married to a sister of a very good friend of mine.''

Surprisingly, that red flag went unnoticed.

So who is Talbott's brother-in-law? His name is Cody Shearer, and a
review of his White House connections reveals the possible workings
     of a new plumber operation.

     A self-styled ''free-lance journalist'' (although he hasn't
published in nearly a decade), Shearer is a former business
associate of Terry Lenzner's Investigative Group International -
the premier opposition-research firm that Dick Morris calls ''the
     White House secret police.''

Lenzner's connections with Clinton go to the seamier side of
politics. The Clinton campaign hired his firm in 1992 to do
''opposition research,'' a euphemism for dirt-digging. Since '94,
the president's personal lawyers have had Lenzner on the payroll,
reportedly searching under the beds and sniffing through the
panties-drawers of Paula Jones, Monica Lewinsky and members of
     Hillary's ''Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy,'' including Starr's team.

Lenzner and Shearer are also old tennis buddies from Washington's
tony St. Albans Tennis Club. Shearer's a close friend of Sidney
Blumenthal's, too, according to published accounts.

Could Shearer be passing Flynt the goods on GOP members? Neither
Shearer nor Flynt returned calls seeking comment. But if this was
the case, it wouldn't be the first time Shearer smeared a Clinton
     critic.

In 1997, Cody Shearer tried to broker a deal between Lenzner and
the Cheyenne-Arapaho tribes to investigate the Senate's Deputy
Whip, Don Nickles (R-Okla.), who was a member of the committee
probing an alleged shakedown of Indian tribes by the Clinton-Gore
campaign in 1996. (Lenzner demanded $17,000 for the job, but tribal
leaders ultimately decided not to hire him.)

Shearer has tried to ingratiate himself with this White House
before. Last summer, the State Department learned he was doing some
free-lance negotiatingwith Serb and Muslim leaders on partitioning
Bosnia - all while claiming he had the backing of the Clinton
administration. Talbott himself had to write his brother-in-law to
tell him to knock it off.

The Shearer connections with the White House don't end there.
     Cody's twin sister Brooke - Strobe Talbott's wife - has been a
friend of Hillary's since their college days. Brooke used to work
for Terry Lenzner as an investigator, where her specialty was
dumpster-diving, the fine art of sifting through the trash, and she
reportedly remains in close contact with her old boss.

Brooke joined the Clinton's 1992 campaign as an aide to Hillary.
''Sometimes at the end of the day, when Bill telephoned,'' she
reminisced of the campaign, ''we'd be laughing so loud, doing
imitations and carrying on, that he'd say, 'You guys sound like
you're having a lot more fun than I am.''' After the campaign, she
headed up Hillary's White House fellows program, and later moved on
to become a senior advisor to the Interior Department.

The Shearer family has yet another relative close to the president:
Cody and Brooke's brother, Derek, an old Oxford chum of Bill's.
They've kept up over the years: Derek Shearer played an
instrumental role in the 1992 campaign. After serving on the
transition team, he took a job at the Commerce Department, and was
later awarded the ambassadorship to Finland. ''I want to be known
as the ambassador who brought Ben and Jerry's to Finland,'' he
     said.

And then there's Strobe Talbott himself. He also roomed at Oxford
with Bill Clinton while they were both Rhodes Scholars, and went on
to Yale Grad School when both Clintons were at Yale Law. Prior to
joining the Clinton administration, Talbott was a Time columnist
who carried a lot of water for his old pal's 1992 presidential
     campaign.

Days after the Lewinsky story broke, ex-Clinton aide George
Stephanopoulos first warned of a possible scorched-earth defense:
''The president said he would never resign, and I think some around
him are willing to take everybody down with him.''

Could this be the makings of a not-so-vast left-wing conspiracy, or
     is it all Shearer coincidence?

White House Political Advisor
Accused of Domestic Violence

The Montgomery County Ledger
By Lee Canular, 20-January-1999 Wednesday

ROCKVILLE, MD -- James Carville, vocal supporter and confidant
of President Bill Clinton, reportedly spent last Monday night in
the Montgomery County Jail after he was arrested on suspicion
of firing a gun into a sofa and repeatedly plunging a knife into a
wall during a fight with his wife in their suburban home here
earlier that evening, according to local police sources.

Rockville police said neighbors called them to the Carville home
at about 6:40 p. m. Monday evening after hearing gunshots.

Carville, an internationally known political consultant and Democrat
Party campaign manager, allegedly had twice discharged a Glock
nine millimeter semi-automatic pistol inside the home, damaged a
living room wall with an oversized hunting knife, threatened the
life of his wife, radio talk show host Mary Matalin Carville, and used
physical force against her.

Rockville police subsequently took him into custody on suspicion of
domestic violence and brandishing a weapon, both misdemeanors. He
was also charged with discharging a firearm in a negligent manner,
a violation which could be prosecuted as a felony.

Carville, 54, apparently was not shooting at his wife when he twice
fired at the couch, although she was in the room at the time, said
Rockville Police Lt. Bobby Masters. The woman was not injured,
Masters noted, and it did not appear that the safety of the couple's
two young children was ever jeopardized.

Masters also indicated that officers confiscated the handgun, as well
as the hunting knife, two shotguns, and an AR-15 model semi-automatic
assault rifle, and are holding them as evidence as their investigation
continues. The pistol firearm, which has no serial number, is believed
to be unregistered.

After his night's detention, Mr. Carville posted bail on a preliminary
charge of domestic violence in the amount of $3500 Tuesday morning,
pending formal arraignment in Montgomery County Superior Court
on Friday, February 12, 1999.

Outside the court room, Carville's attorney, Mr. Harrison Jackson of
the Washington, D. C. firm of Waltham, Jackson and Curtis, said
neither of the Carvilles would be making public comments on the
matter. "They both just want to bring this whole thing to closure as
soon as possible," said Mr. Jackson.

Mrs. Carville did not attend the bail hearing and has not returned
repeated phone calls.

The couple is known for their co-authorship of All's Fair: Love, War,
and Running for President (Simon & Schuster/ Random House, 1994),
one of the best selling campaign memoirs in American history.
During their 1992 courtship, Mrs. Carville, nee Matalin, was a campaign
manager for President Bush's re-election effort, and Mr. Carville
worked for the Clinton campaign.
