According to the book "Knights of the Crown" by D'Arcy Jonathan Dacre Boulton (ISBN 0851154174) there were two concurrent Dragon Orders. The first was founded by Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund of Luxemburg, who, as consort of Marie of Anjou, Queen of Hungary, was elected King Zsigmond of Hungary in 1387. His wife Marie died shortly thereafter. He founded the Society of the Dragon with his second wife, Barbara von Cilli, in 1408 (not in 1387 as I'd said earlier). It's purpose at the outset was to protect the Catholic Church against heresy (he had to deal with the protestant Hussites in Bohemia at the time). It was also meant to keep rebellious Hungarian nobles in the Catholic camp and prevent them from making deals with the Turks. Sigismund died in 1437, and the Society of the Dragon continued through the reigns of his son-in-law, Albrecht of Austria, and grandson Ladislas V. The "Draconists" were not exactly loyal to the throne, and frequent dalliances with the Turks put the country in jeopardy. After Ladislas's death (in 1459, I think), the Hungarian nobles elected Matthias Corvinus to the throne (son of John Hunyadi). The Society became defunct sometime after 1461, and certainly before 1500. The second "Dragon" Order was the Enterprise, or "Emprise" du Dragon, founded by Jean de Grailly, Count of Foix in 1415. Little is known about this organization, as it's statutes were never published and it's purpose was never made known. The old chateau of Foix was a Cathar stronghold, and is located in the Ariege, very close to Rennes-le-Chateau.
