He did serve in the armed forces, the army. You may have been put off by the
fact that he did not serve overseas as he implied when he spoke of viewing the
German death camps. It always struck me that his comments on how he made sure
that the sight of the prisoners was burned in into his memory because some
would later deny it ever happened were a paraphrase of remarks made by
Eisenhower.
