The last word of the oath, as you have correctly provided it, is also
optional. Any person who is opts for entitlement to wear the uniform is so
charged (and I think certain classes of civil servant are as well).
One of the issues involving the oath overall that provides some confusion
is "... obey the orders : of the President of the United States and the
officers appointed over me..." Again, the assumption is all orders to be
obeyed will be legal and lawful. The participants at My Lai, Rep of Viet
Nam, ran into problems with Lt Calley{sp?} (as he also encountered
problems) insisting on his orders to be obeyed. And, so, a bit of
skepticism and personal judgment is always required, recogising that
politicians, officers (commissioned and noncommissioned), or civilian
equivalents sometimes don't have truth, justice and the American way on
their side(s).
