-Caveat Lector- From: Erin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Treaty on transport of genetically-engineered organisms to be ratified 2_5_99 By ANNE SILVERSTEIN (c) Earth Times News Service One hundred and seventy nations are expected to adopt a treaty committed to insuring the safe transport of genetically-engineered organisms across borders. The meeting will be held in Cartagena, Colombia in February. Living-modified organisms, or LMOs, are created through a number of techniques including gene transplants and gene modification. These new LMOs have provided benefits in the fields of agriculture and medicine as well as others. On the other hand, many experts are worried about the potential hazards these new organisms could present to human health as well as to the survival of other "natural" organisms. The new treaty addresses reducing any potential risks. Delegates will need to resolve whether the treaty also concerns products that contain dead biologically-engineered organisms or components from LMOs. Those products include some vaccines, drugs, processed foods and food additives. The biosafety treaty has been negotiated under the auspices of the Convention on Biological Diversity, which was signed at the Earth Summit in 1992.
