-Caveat Lector- LIGHT SHED ON LENZNER ===================== (CNNS, 02/07/99) -- Terry Lenzner heads Investigative Group International (IGI), a team of about 100 private investigators whose members include former FBI, CIA, and DEA agents as well as "reporters and news producers from ABC, NBC and CBS." [1] IGI, founded in ==1984==, has headquarters in Washington, DC, and offices in Los Angeles, New York, Boston, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, and London. After at first denying that the Clinton White House had hired Lenzner and his IGI, Clinton lawyers David E. Kendall and Robert S. Bennett finally admitted to having employed Lenzner et al. since 1994. [2] Lenzner and IGI have been called "the White House secret police" by former Clinton confidant Dick Morris. Ken Starr, the so-called "Independent" Counsel, also has his own team of detectives who dig for dirt on Bill Clinton and associates. Battling private and semi-private detectives lurk in the shadows of the ongoing Washington, DC Scandal-Mania. Among those employed by Lenzner and IGI is LARRY POTTS. Larry Potts "was the supervising FBI official in the siege of Randy Weaver's family." [3] Potts also handled the Waco Massacre which culminated on April 19, 1993. It was Potts, then an Assistant FBI Director, together with FBI siege commander Jeff Jamar, who authorized the "rules of engagement" at the Branch Davidian church and residence. [4] Besides golf courses, the elite power players often congregate at private tennis courts. "Thomas L. Friedman, the New York Times correspondent who covers the State Department, plays tennis with the secretary of state [ca. 1992]. Brit Hume, who covers the White House for ABC, plays tennis with the president [ca. 1992]." [5] At Washington DC's elite tennis club, St. Albans Tennis Club, VERNON JORDAN, STROBE TALBOTT and Timothy Wirth, a former senator and now (presumably) a lobbyist, hobnob with such as Terry Lenzner, who also plays tennis there. [6] Between sets, much can be discussed, in a friendly way. In the bad old days, J. Edgar Hoover sat on secret files at "his" FBI. Hoover, a Thirty-third Degree Mason, is father of what George Stephanopolous has called "The Ellen Rometsch Strategy." Ms. Rometsch had had an affair with President John F. Kennedy. But it turned out that Rometsch, from East Germany, had belonged to Communist youth organizations in her native land. "Rometsch might have been a Communist plant." [7] Robert F. Kennedy, Attorney General and supposedly Hoover's boss, begged Hoover for help in keeping the scandal quiet. Hoover helped keep the lid on, but at a price. "The cover-up had been achieved at great cost and left the Kennedys more indebted to [Hoover] than ever." [8] With Hoover now gone, the trend is emerging to use private and semi-private investigators to control top secret blackmail files. By using private agencies, the secret files are inaccesible to Freedom of Information Act requests. One such private operation is the Wackenhut Corporation. "Wackenhut is a private detective agency founded in 1954 by former FBI man George Wackenhut and three ex-FBI friends... His connections helped build his agency into a powerful private police force with huge government contracts." [9] By 1966, Wackenhut had become a haven for retiring FBI agents. [10] In 1995, the courageous White House journalist, Sarah McClendon, dared to ask Bill Clinton about top-secret CIA files being surreptitiously transferred from CIA headquarters. "Sarah stood up and said, 'Mr. President. What's going on at the CIA? They're shipping records out of the building, back to ex-employees.'" Clinton's response was equivocal. Now, the two latest players helping the boom in private and semi-private detective agencies are Bill Clinton and Ken Starr. They are part of "a new kind of war, in which embarrassing information about political and legal opponents is provided for use as ammunition in today's partisan culture of scandal."
