Re: Sam Dash and the Independent Counsel

The Wash Post 2/9/99 featured an article about
opposition by the ABA and
others to reauthorzation of the Independent
Counsel Act. Without getting into
the merits of that argument, Dash's remarks hit
the nail on the head. When the
political establishment wrings thier hands over
the "abuses" of the I.C., what they
are really complaining about is the rampant
prosecutorial abuse present throughout
the system, mostly due to the Police State
Legislation passed by an "anti crime"
pandering Congress over the past 20 years.

The Washington power structure just hates it when
they get bit on the ass by their own dirty deeds.

For example, Clinton having to answer intrusive
questions about his sex life because
he supported federal legislation allowing this in
sex discrimination laws.

What is sad is that you don't see Clinton
demanding the law be changed. Or Congress
demanding Federal Prosecutors stop their police
state tactics, instead use ad hominum attacks
rather then address the real problem.

Of course at heart they love their police state
rules....as long as they are used
only against us, not them.

"Sam Dash, former chief counsel of the Senate
Watergate Committee and an architect of the law,
said the excesses attributed to independent
counsels are actually standard procedure in U.S.
attorneys' offices throughout the country. If
complaints are to be made, he said, they should be
directed "at federal prosecutorial practices
generally."
