Savimbi, a multi-lingual PhD, was, I discovered, one of
Africa's most intelligent, impressive, capable leaders, and,
notably, the only one who ever is one time. But he was
shunned by the US, which was content to deal with the
communoist regime so long as it suplied oil. Sustained by
back-country diamond fields, discreet aid from Zaire's late
chief, Gen. Mobutu, and his Ovambundu tribe, which makes up
nearly half Angola's people, Savimbi soldiered on. However,
Congo's new Kabila regime, quickly made an alliance with
Angola's marxists, blessed by the US, and Zimbabwe's leftist
leader, Robert Mugabe,to crush Savimbi and UNITA.
Now, we see the exceedingly curious spectacle of the US-
backed communist regime in Luanda using US dollars from the
sale of oil to America to hire anti-American Cuban communist
troops to fight pro-American, anti-communist Angolans, and
to resume buying arms from Russia, with American money.

Essentially the war in Angola was and is a tribal war.
Savimbi is unusual in angola having been educated up in a protestant mission
station. a highly intelligent man,(I have seen some of his writings and is
very impressive) he has been a chameleon when it comes to political
philosophies.
Starting as a protestant leader of a tribal rebellion against portuguese
colonialism, he transferred allegiance to chinese communism until the
portuguese pulled out and chinese aid stopped. He was then supported by the
SA govt.(when questioned about it he said if you drowning you will accept
aid from a crocodile) and became freemarket prowestern, but really he is
fighting for his tribe.
the russians backed the MPLA (who are also actually a tribal grouping) which
won the capital
and hence the country.
The americans backed a bunch of fundamentalist marxists and just caused
trouble

The best solution for angola would be a division of the country in 2 with
each dominant tribe having its own area. Even better would be the split of
namibia with the north joining Savimbi(same tribe) and the south joining
South africa(they are mostly afrikaners and mixed race..whateve the PC word
is these days i dont know)
No one will do that and this nice little war can go on and on until the
diamonds(UNITA) and oil(MPLA) run out and then the west will stop supplying
arms because there is no more money to be made.Perpetual war for perpetual
